No.
Paul Newman was a much better actor than John Wayne.

Wayne was a one note macho man who always had to be the one in control and never humble. The winner who never gets killed. Newman was a method actor who had more range. Plus he started a food charity where he didn't make a dime from the products to help kids. And of course we could go on how Wayne was a racist and homophobic POS etc and Newman didn't share any negative opinions on those things that I know of. So yeah. I'm with Team Paul.

Assuming we are talking about acting ability, Wayne couldn't touch Newman

I think Wayne was better than often credited for. But still, Newman was the better actor.

Definitely NOT.
Paul Newman has a commanding presence (The Hustler (1961)/The Color of Money (1986) etc) which I don't think Wayne has, at least not to his degree. not many can challenge Newman if you ask me in their overall presence especially when he's in a role he's born to play like The Hustler/The Color of Money which is that Fast Eddie Felson character.

John Wayne COULD act. See The Searchers, Red River, Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. He could stink up a few reels of film also, see Jet Pilot, The Conqueror, The Green Berets. But he always had to play the same character. The Character could be a little harsher, Ethan Edwards or a little funnier, Big Jake McCandles, but still the same basic mold. Whether that was Wayne's preference or the studios preference, I don't know. Probably both. In the end John Wayne had to be John Wayne. Same thing with Elvis Presley, who could act but still had to play the same character, over and over. Newman played a wider range of characters, from Hud, to the Hustler, to The Verdict. He never took a drastic turn, like Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West, but still a greater range. Its difficult to compare Jon Wayne to other actors because he always was John Wayne.

I am not a fan of John Wayne as a person, and not a big fan of his as an actor, but to say that John Wayne was not a commanding presence is ridiculous.

them1ghtyhumph Re-read what I said (i.e. "which I don't think Wayne has, at least not to his degree")... I basically said Wayne's overall presence is not as strong as Newman's as I acknowledge that Wayne is a big name from the old days so I kind of assume his presence connects with many. but at least for me... Newman's presence is much superior for me personally as I think Wayne is at least a bit overrated. like Wayne's iconic image exceeds my perception of his presence and in this regard he's definitely overrated as between say Wayne vs Eastwood, to compare a couple who were in Westerns from the old days etc, ill take Eastwood hands down. p.s. but given what I said I could see how someone would interpret what I said the way you did given my 'which I don't think Wayne has' comment but after that with the 'at least not to his degree' suggests he could still have a strong presence etc. o well, at least I made it much clearer above now.

No one played John Wayne better than John Wayne.
But I think Paul Newman was a better overall actor.
