The year is 1988 in Stockton, California. It's October 18h. Halfway to Halloween, it's getting cold outside, but in a California cold kind of way. Stockton in October is scary, but not just because of the month. The streets are filled with crime and drug addicts, depending on the side of town you're on. Starting this year, Stockton has the highest homicide rate. This was not a great time for the San Joaquin Valley. Especially not if you're Gayle Marks.
Who is Gayle Marie Marks?
Gayle was an 18 year old living in Central Stockton with her mother. It was the late 80s, and Gayle sure looked like it. She had blonde, big permed hair and shorts bangs. On October 18th, 1988, Gayle wore a black knit top and skirt, paired with a brown scarf tied around her waist. She had a black leather necklace with spheres on it and brown high tops.
Gayle had just moved back to California. Being an army brat, she had lived in So Cal, then Colorado, Germany, North Carolina, Texas (where she graduated high school), and then, finally, Stockton.
It was a boring Saturday for Gayle. She worked at a local restaurant, Rick's New York Style Pizza. Her mother worked at the San Joaquin County Mental Health Center. Gayle stayed with her mom for a bit, but she needed a new license. Obviously not able to drive, she walked to the DMV on Park Street. It was about 20 minutes. Not a problem. After that, she was going to hang with her friend and then go to work at 5. She went in and got her license renewed, which we know because it came in the mail. What we don’t know is anything after that.
Gayle’s friend wasn’t home because he had jury duty. So where was Gayle? If she made it to her friends, she would’ve found a locked door. She could’ve waited a while for the bus to go to work. Maybe she did get on a bus. We just don’t know. What we do know is that Gayle never showed up at Rick’s.
She went to the DMV and then she was just gone.
Theories
Stockton, to say the least, was kind of a shithole in the early 90s. Part of this shithole involved many, many drugs addicts and gangs and, honestly, they’re still kind of there.
A notable person/people of interest is the Speed Freak Killers. The Speed Freak Killers were two childhood friends turned serial killer duo, Loren Herzog and Wesley Shermantine. Active from the mid 80s to 1999, the men would get high on meth and just kill anyone. They were motivated by what they needed: money, sex, some sick kind of entertainment. Sometimes they would just shotgun a guy and rob him, and sometimes they would kidnap and rape women. Their charged body count is 4. Their suspected body count? 75.
But where did all 75 of those bodies go? Shermantine revealed 7 different body sites. The first was a well in Linden that had 3 bodies and a fetus. The second and third sites were locations on his parent’s property with 2 bodies, one for each place. The last four were all wells, and all of them had no bodies. While lying on Death Row, Shermantine keeps dragging out information to stay alive.
Sue Kizer, Gayle’s mother, was mad about the way the PD was handling the body dumps. Another mother of a missing Valley teen actually sued because the reckless handling of one set of bones, and a well site in general, disfigured them. Kizer worries her daughter’s body was in a well, but has no way of knowing because of the PD. However, Kizer also wrote several letters to Shermantine. After their correspondence, Kizer does not think it was the duo. She thinks it was someone else. I also want to mention that the well known missing girl Michaela Garecht disappeared a month after Gayle also in Northern California. Gayle's mother believes the man is responsible for Garecht's death, but not Gayle's.
After
Sue Kizer is still struggling with her daughter’s likely death. Sue doesn’t believe Gayle ran away or did anything to get herself into a “bad situation.” Gayle was a normal girl doing normal things. Kizer is incredibly dedicated to her daughter and maintains an active web page in hopes that one day her body will be found.
Here is an expert from the site that meant a lot to me:
“I start thinking about Gayle. What kind of a person would she be? How would all of our lives be if she were still here? What would she look like? Then I think of what probably happened to her that night...she got into a car with someone she vaguely knew, and the minute she did she knew she shouldn't have, but now it is too late. Something horrible happens, she is strangled or stabbed or shot but she dies. My Gayle dies, I wonder if she thinks of me in those last moments? I wonder if she asked for me? I think of how scared and frightened she must be how helpless she was, how she must have fought and I think as her mom why wasn't I there to protect her? Why wasn't she at work where she should have been? Why did she call me on the phone? What did he do to her? Where did he put her? Why can't we find her? Was she left out in the open to just rot? Did he bury her? Where? Why can't we find her? Someday will someone stumble upon a bone and wonder what it is and just kick it aside like an old rock or something? Someday will I have to look at whatever they find of my daughter and remember that site for the rest of my life? Maybe that would be better than the vision running through my head. For I see my daughter half buried with an arm sticking up in the air like she is trying to get help and no one sees her. I see people passing close by her and she is right there but no one sees her. God Gayle, I see you, I see you night and day, I see you all the time, I will help you I swear I will and no one will ever ever hurt you again. I just need to know where you are, please help me find where you are........and the water finally flows over the dam and rushes through all the cracks and crevices the plains and the valleys the mountains and rivers and lakes and oceans that have made up all of the emotions of my being since Gayle left my life but lives forever in my heart and soul there will never ever be closure unless we can turn back the clocks of time.“
