The new season has started. TFC got off on the right foot beating Philly on the road 3-1. How do I know soccer is third (maybe even second) on my sports to watch list? I preferred watching the Atlanta-DC game yesterday to the Raptors-Pistons game.

Montreal Impact also won their first road game. Because of the weather here, the first six games will be played on the road. First home game is April 13th.
Maybe I will try to catch a game this year. I haven't been to an Impact game in ages.

Could've had the hat trick if Vancouver won their game. No chance of Montreal playing early in the season at Olympic stadium?
I have a friend who's been to every TFC home game, league or otherwise, since their inception but he won't be going anymore because they don't play enough Canadians. Unfortunately MLS' player rules make Canadians 'foreigners' on their home teams.

They did it in years past. I am not sure why they don't do it anymore.

Wikipedia tells me Canadian citizens on a Canadian team are domestics, as are American citizens which is a slim bonus because as if. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLS_International_Roster_SlotsTFC, Whitecaps, & Impact are required to have 3 Canadian domestics on their rosters. A few years ago when TFC were bumbling around, there was an idea why not just fill the team with Canadian int'ls so as to give the national team an actual full schedule of competing together.

This thread will probably gain more traffic on here than a Golf, Nascar, Boxing or UFC thread. Go Philly Union!

The people of Austin, Texas: what are they thinking about right now?
I don't give a shit, they've got "Austin City Limits", the South by Southwest Festival, and a few Richard Linklater movies. But not another city's team.

Atlanta going through what TFC did last year. First 4 games: 0-2-2 and only 2 GF. Toronto don't seem to miss Giovinco on offence. 10 goals in first 3 games, all wins.

Toronto FC is cruising under the Leafs & Raptors radar for the time being. Not having to play CL home & aways with Mexican sides for weeks this year must be a help.

MLS attendance"Attendance for Major League Soccer matches ranks among the best in global soccer, both from a league-wide and club-specific view, according to a study conducted by The CIES Football Observatory. Comparing attendances between 2003-2008 and 2013-2018, MLS has seen the second-largest growth rate among global leagues at a 34 percent increase (from 15,920 to 21,358), behind only the Polish first division (47 percent from 6,114 to 8,959). MLS's average attendance of 21,358 from 2013-2018 ranks 8th in the world, slightly trailing France's top division (21,556) and Italy's Serie A (22,967). Atlanta, Seattle rank high among clubs On the club level, a pair of MLS sides rub elbows with the world's elite. Atlanta United, which debuted as an expansion club in 2017, placed 10th in average attendance at 51,547 for the period between 2013 and 2018. Borussia Dortmund tops the club chart at 80,000, with global powers like Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid also in the top 10. ATLUTD rank ahead of Manchester City, Newcastle United, Liverpool, Benfica and Atletico Madrid among others. The Seattle Sounders (42,797) are also featured on that list, coming in at 29th across the globe, ahead of the likes of Club America, AC Milan, Chelsea and others."

I watched LA Galaxy play Vancouver something or other a week or so ago and have to say America has a very long way to go still. The quality was pretty poor apart from an aging Ibrahimovic showing everyone else on the park up. The coaches seemed to have taken bits from different European and South American styles of play and just tried to glue then together, there was no real strategy that you could see. Zonal marking was what it looked like defensively and Zlatan was allowed to do what he liked without the slightest attempt at man to man or two man to man marking on him. The defences were frankly embarrassing some decent coaching is needed at the most basic level if the league is to progress.

Alejandro Pozuelo, 4 goals in 4 games (+ 4 assists if you're into that) for Toronto FC.
Me like.

How many teams now? Over 100? I'll be playing in MLS soon because I'll be the only American who is left to play.
Overexpansion will kill this league. Better to strengthen the lower tiers and institute promotion and relegation. Casual fans would love it.

I hope Marc Gasol has some champagne at the ready, he may be called back into parade duty if TFC should win. Atlanta fans just couldn't be a difference maker... several of these Reds played & won in f'n Mexico f'n City at f'n Azteca. That penalty save was amazing, I leapt in my chair.
