I would have thought Jean Grey.
I don't know about most popular (admired, liked) but for the casual going audience, perhaps one of the most well-known is Mary-Jane Watson.
Because of the MCU, it's probably Black Widow right now. Some of us (me) never heard of her before the movies.
Hand down its jean grey/storm/invisible girl and there is kitty pryde. this is the reception of kitty pryde
Kitty Pryde has been well received as a comic book character and as a member of the X-Men. Wizard magazine put her at number #13 in 200 Greatest Comic Characters of All Time. She was the highest female comic character in the list beating rivals such as Wonder Woman, Buffy Summers, and She-Hulk.[96] IGN ranked her as the 47th greatest comic book hero of all time stating that "as X-Men writers have often found it useful to introduce younger teen recruits to offset the experienced members of the team, Kitty Pryde set the standard when she debuted, and none have surpassed her".[97] IGN rated Kitty Pryde #3 on its list of the Top 25 X-Men from the Past 40 Years describing her as the mutant everyman, the common girl turned superhero; IGN also stated that as her pet dragon, Lockheed, "became instantly attached to Kitty, [they] were hooked early on".[98] Marvel.com ranked her as the tenth greatest X-Men member stating that "unquestionably, the dynamic of the X-Men shifted entirely when teenage whiz kid Kitty Pryde joined the team in the early 1980s"; Marvel.com also stated that even though Kitty has since blossomed into a young woman of considerable maturity and power, she remains the access point to the X-Men for countless readers.[99] A later list on Marvel's website, ranking the top 50 X-Men characters, placed her in first place, citing the ease of identifying with her for the audience, and her development over the years.
but mcu fans dont want to say so due to the disgraced black widow. any sane marvel fan knows it is sue storm/storm/phoenix. ironic that after 2 mcu type of f4 movies and one supposedly bad one , people still sight invisible girl more than black widow. disney tried hard to take away F4 as the first marvel family and they bombed everytime. disney tried to replace iron man with spidey as the central hero of marvel and they bombed, disney tried to replace xmen with inhumans and they bombed. LOL.
this is what makes Spiderman/X-Men/F4 iconic in ways no mcu character will ever be. they have stood the test of time and have had longevity.l they dont need cinematic disney bullshit crap comedy movies and fake media hype. they made it alone on comics, their movies and tv showes, games were extras for them and where the closest things marvel had and still have to superman, woner woman and batman in terms of lore and impact. why do you think mcu fans so desperately wanted them to be in the mcu. if mcu was so popuplar why does mcu need spiderman/xmen/f4? mcu are beggers. it is clear spiderman and xmen are better off without the mcu, that is pretty much fact at this point. F4 need the right people. not the mcu.
Captain marvel will prove to be another mcu bullshit crap with no real longevity like most mcu characters. I am sure Storm owning those usa army guys is more significant and timeless than the jokes and comedy of captain marvel
Look at the cinematography and effects of X2 guys. 15 years and it looks better than captain marvel and all mcu cartoonish movie.s igh no wonder mcu are only popular to naive kids and the brianless masses.

oh and one last thing, Phoenix is not about movies, it was about the story it is one of the most recognised and land mark story in comic literacy. perhaps the most iconic marvel comic story tied with the night Gwen Stacy died. this was when marvel wrote real stories not the brainless nonsense they have now. Yeah, the dark phoenix story that Fox completely fucked up. mcu has fucked up more, also the movie been a derivative take of dark phoenix does not change the impact of the comic story that is not how it works.
the dark knight returns, the night gwen stacy died and dark phoenix are still land mark classics. it does not matter how amazing spiderman 2, X3, Batman V Superman turned out or how you feel.
spiderman, xmen, batman are not defined by their movies. they are defined by their great comic literacy. they can survive without movies.
DOFP would have still been another landmark marvel classic even if the movie was bad but then again, it would have been bad if mcu made it. since it will be comedy disney crap

Ok, so basically you agree that Fox fucked up the Phoenix storyline. Glad we finally agreed on something

Part of being a fan of xmen, spiderman, batman is that we fans can say when they fucked up and demand better.
MCU fans will still try and defend mandarian and loltron and thor jokenock because the only thing these characters have are their disney comedy movies. lol

We're talking about the Phoenix storyline. So let me make this specific: Do you think Fox did a good job portraying the Phoenix storyline?

At any given time its been a different character. Rogue, Elektra, Spider Woman, Spider Gwen have all been hot for a minute. But Marvel has actually not had a great track record of sustaining a solo female led title for very long.
Their longest (not considering Millie the Model) is actually a now little remembered series called Spider Girl, in which a future version of Peter and Maryjane get married and their daughter, May, becomes Spider Girl. That lasted 100 issues #0–100, October 1998 – July 2006. And even then the title was nearly cancelled several times due to low sales. Campaigns by fans saved it only so long before enough was enough.
Captain Marvel as a comic book title actually keeps getting cancelled too. Marvel keeps that character alive because they want to turn it into something, but the sales aren't really there.
The true winner in solo female comics is this...
And were past that number even now.
In its hey day even Lois Lane had a longer lasting solo comic than Marvel female characters. True story.

Not sure about Spider Gwen though. She's a newer character and may not have as much name-recognition as characters like Elektra and Invisible Woman.

p.s. Do some research and see how many times Marvel has rebooted their comics recently, including Captain Marvel.

Because DC keeps rebooting their comics and there is no way it is up to issue 700. Wonder Woman comics began in 1941 and is 1 of the few titles that has continuously run since the Golden Age. Detective Comics (which began in 1937) s closing in on 1000 issues and Action Comics (which began in 1938) is already past 1000 issues. So it's very possible for Wonder Woman to have 700+ issues.
