He seems to have faded and not grown old in movies like Tom Hanks, Travolta, Gibson, et al.

He had a few big flops and underperforming movies.

William Hurt was a made for the Eighties star. Or so it seems. After 1990 he faded. I've heard different stories as to why. The Doctor got some good reviews, and critics seemed to like Hurt's performance in it. I never saw the film but something about the way it was received made me wonder if Hurt had reached a dead run with it, as in "sooner or later William Hurt's going to play a doctor in a movie called The Doctor, and when he does that will bring him to a point as a star beyond which he cannot go". Don't ask me to explain. It was just an epiphany . Something to do with Hurt never having been personally popular, being more of a star for the critics and a handful of elite filmgoers, not the general public, but then it's always struck me as the same for Meryl Streep and she's enjoying a lengthy career of Davis/Hepburn proportions.

Peter Fonda, a different type from Hurt, and a born Hollywood insider, faded fast after the huge success of Easy Rider. He reminds me of Hurt in his seeming to have something "wrong" with him (psych issues?), not sure what, that held him back personally and professionally after his first flush of success. Hurt at least had ten good years.

The alpha male became persona non grata in Hollywood. I think Charlton Heston was the last big US born alpha star--Clint Eastwood would be too but he was often cast as the damaged or slightly comical hero, not quite the same confident anglo hero (though Heston was put through the ringer in Planet of the Apes so you could say it is the beginning of that phase of deconstructing the anglo white protagonist).
Harrison Ford's ancestry disqualifies him, and he was also something of a damaged comical hero persona.
Ditto for Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson. Arnie was foreign born and more of a caricature. Stallone being Italian also disqualifies him.
William Hurt is sort of the neurotic stand in for the dramatic protagonist of the Jimmy Stewart variety.
Can't believe how blind I was to this erosion of European protagonist role models. It's as obvious as Samuel Jackson getting all the alpha males roles and Morgan Freeman getting the wise man parts.

What. Now. Just thinking aloud. Wasn't so bad in the 50s (Hitchcock's blonde leads were not dumb)and 60s compared to today but even then the owners' preferences and prejudices were on display as Brando noted.
Hurt is one of those anguished doubting male leads, so he wasn't a role model or action star. Jackman, Pine or Hemsworth should in theory be the alpha male but they are shackled by the script to be doubtful, or comical, etc. There's really no one to replace the Robert Shaw or Lee Marvin type.
Cannot have an assertive strong white male lead in the old fashioned sense--those roles are given to Shia Labouef, Daniel Radcliffe unless it is supposed to be a villain...

William Fichter and Bryan Cranston are very good supporting actors, even if they're not in the film long they really make their presence known.

I’ve revisited a few of his movies in the last year or so.
Altered States (1980) Body Heat (1981) Dark City (1998) A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) Tuck Everlasting (2022)
Hurt died just 3 months ago on March 13, 2022 at age 71.
