These are directors who used to make studio films but now just make more independent films.
For example:
Francis Ford Coppola Brian De Palma Paul Verhoeven

Steven Soderbergh Roland Emmerich William Friedkin Joe Dante Frank Oz Lawrence Kasdan
I'm not sure about the Wachowskis, but it's been awhile since they made a studio tentpole film.

Francis Ford Coppola (79-80) and his daughter , Sofia , is a well known moviemaker too Brian de Palma (78-79) excellent director but basically semi-retired Paul Voerhoeven (80-81) basically semi-retired in Holland
why not mention Ridley Scott (81) or Woody Allen (83) as well ?
And why is Politicidal sledging Mel Gibson ? an excellent director , who is struggling in the industry , because of allegations of his wife-beating . Unfortunately like some directors with an ego , he can be a bully (and you can add Russel Crowe into that brutal mess).
