Most people aren't knowledgable enough to know that one of the best looking Dracula movies was Dracula 1979 before the director went insane and insisted 50% of the movie's color be drained for the DVD/Bluray because he always wanted it to be a black and white movie. This travesty is almost as bad as The Star Wars Special Editions. There should be a law to protect movies from directors who go insane. UPDATE 2019: So, the NEW Collector's Edition Bluray has 2 discs, one with the original theatrical version in color, the other disc to throw straight in the trash where it belongs! Victory is mine!www.amazon.com/Dracula-Blu-ray-Frank-Langella/dp/B07WNZR4X1

It would have been fine if this insane idiot would have included the theatrical cut along with the bastardization, but no, he had to "pull a George Lucas" and make my blood boil. The most memorable moment of the movie was Wina VanHelsing as a vampire with scary blood red eyes, now her eyes just look black.

Yeah, The People vs George Lucas was good. Too bad it didn't get enough attention to get the Star Wars theatrical cuts released on Bluray.

^Row 1 is the incomprehensible, ugly DVD/Bluray color, row 2 is the correct fullscreen laserdisc broadcast on TCM, and row 3 is the official theatrical trailer with correct color. Who the fuck could possibly prefer row 1?

Okay, after reading other DVD/Bluray forums it seems it is possible to make this movie watchable by going into your tv's Advanced Picture options turning the color saturation, blue, red, yellow, and brightness all the way up and the green all the way down. I tried it and it works, thank god. Now I can calm down a bit, but I'm still annoyed I have to do this just to see what is happening onscreen. It's worth the trouble since the John Williams score alone puts this movie above nearly every other Dracula movie.

So you're saying the best thing about the movie, and only reason to watch the movie, is the colour scheme?

Yeah, The People vs George Lucas was good. Too bad it didn't get enough attention to get the Star Wars theatrical cuts released on Bluray. This actually exists? Neat!

So you're saying the best thing about the movie, and only reason to watch the movie, is the colour scheme? No, I'm saying the original color scheme of this movie was very good and reminiscent of the classic Hammer horror movies but the DVD/Bluray picture is so murky I can barely make out what is happening on screen.

I like to honor the director's intent, but I also like to see the film as I remember it in the theater. Ideally on home video we should be able to do both. The Shout Factory Blu-rays of Cronenberg's Dead Ringers has theatrical and director's editions which are identical apart from aspect ratio. The director prefers 1.66 to the theatrical 1.85. And look at the Bladerunner packages.
I remember the color of Dracula being rather fine in the theater and the DVD and Blu-ray excessively drab by comparison. The director explains that is the look he always wanted but he couldn't get the film stock he wanted at the time.

That's what the director wants you to believe, but I've read the studio wouldn't let him film in black and white because it would have limited appeal. I know a lot of people want to defend these director's choices, but once a movie is released it also belongs to the public not just the director.

I just rewatched it a few days ago, and yeah, gone are the blood red scenes I recalled from my childhood. There is still all that red-swirl business though, from when Drac bites Lucy and has his way with her.

I think the 1979 version had the most Gothic cinematography--especially compared to the awful Coppola version which didn't have a single outdoor shot! But the 1977 BBC version would have looked great on film. It's a shame they went for cheap videotape.

I need to watch more versions of Dracula, I've yet to watch the Hammer Dracula film with Chris Lee. Apparently there was a Spanish version released the same year as the Lugosi film that's I've heard was actually better.
