I can only think of one movie that benefited from the filmmaker going back and tinkering with it, and that's Blade Runner. I can't think of any other movie where I prefer the directors cut. I'm not counting instances where the MPAA forced a filmmaker to cut gore and they go back and release it uncut on home video, but going back and "fixing your movie" typically does not end in good results. I remember renting Dracula '79 from the library on VHS as a kid, then being so psyched for the DVD release only to see that it had basically been turned into a black and white movie. I think Mike Nichols said it best, he doesn't even like the trend of including deleted scenes on the DVD release because "once it's cut from the movie, it's dead".

Yeah, The People vs George Lucas was good. Too bad it didn't get enough attention to get the Star Wars theatrical cuts released on Bluray. well this year there was a george lucas approved screening of the 81 theatrical un-special editioned version of Star Wars in a theater in hollywood and restored and looks like his inflated ego has chanhed and i have bootleg blurays of the despecialzed editions of star wars trilogy on bd. Maybe next year when the UltraHD4K BDs come out the classic trilogy will have the original versions too I can't wait for this new blu-ray even for the extras and original version
