As former rodeo star Jeff McCloud in the lusty men (1952), perhaps the closest Mitchum came to playing a fully realised natural performance.
Least favorite character is Curt Bridges in track of the cat (1954), a complete A-hole.

Many to choose from. I'll go with his independent minded rum runner from Thunder Road. His son, James Mitchum, was in Thunder Road with Dad.

I like to quote the critic who compared the original Cape Fear to the 1991 remake, to wit, that Robert Mitchum exudes more menace just by showing up than DeNiro could muster for all his Method huffing and puffing.

I agree totally re Mitchum versus De Niro. Maybe a bit unfair due to the latter's small stature and lack of strong screen presence, but that's the way it was. It's strange to me that Martin Scorsese chose to remake,--of all movies!--the 1962 black and white shocker Cape Fear, so perfect for what it was, and set in a place and at a time that gave it a special resonance that no remake could ever have. Definitely my favorite Mitchum performance. He owns his every scene.
