He's 77 with heart problems. He will probably die in jail and registered sex offenders automatically have their passports confiscated here, so he will never go back to his life of Cardinalian luxury in the Vatican. A friend of mine's aunt was a nun back in the day and his sex offences were common knowledge within some sectors the Catholic church, she swears, though of course covered up. Its not enough to atone for his crimes butt at least he has been convicted so better late than never.

Pell was a dirty man who hid behind his position and garb and took advantage of this....."I am who I am, no-one will believe them". However, this sex offender stuff about confiscating passports and registering as sex offenders can seem like a bit off overkill. It doesn't mean they are going to be a threat to society once released, especially when they are historic charges and serving the sentence should be punishment enough. Does a dangerous violent offender have to register as a violent offender and have their passports confiscated? They do the time and then get released on parole. That should be the end of story as far as I'm concerned and not dragging it in the dirt even more. That is NOT just. The rest is all just legal and bureaucratic smoke and mirrors to pander to all the faux outrage of the simple-minded lynch mob.

As George Pell is religious I chose the word 'atone' due to what he should be doing, though he appears so arrogant that I am guessing he will not. The deal with the passport is a law passed to stop paedos from going overseas to act out their crimes on hapless, mainly Asian children. Also being on the paedo register is not a choice, it is obligatory. These measures are seen as justified due to the statistical evidence of the rate of reoffending in the case of paedophiles.
