I loooove both of them, but I'm gonna go with Star Wars as being the superior franchise.

Agreed. The Star Wars franchise only has only one great movie, with the rest being good at best, while all three of the LotRs are masterful.

I vote for LOTR. Star Wars bored me to tears as a child and still fails to hold my interest as an adult.

I find Star Wars enjoyable and even moving at certain moments (and accept that they work more for certain other movie viewers). But for me, the Lord of the Rings movies are by far my favorites (and masterful, as another user above said).

But I also rate Star Wars ANH and Empire 10/10. Imo at least, BB ;-)

Hmm... interesting. I rate all 3 of the original LOTR trilogy highly, whereas I only enjoyed 2/3 of the original Star Wars trilogy. Problem is with their prequels. Episodes II and III of Star Wars were utter crap. I enjoyed Phantom Menace mostly because 1. Quigon was badass 2. Darth Maul was badass 3. Padme was beautiful (somehow she didn't look as attractive in the other movies).
On the other hand, I did enjoy the Hobbit trilogy a bit more than Episodes II and III but not as much as the Phantom Menace. So both franchises are a bit tied. If I had to award one of them I guess I'd go with LOTR, just because modern audiences are a lot harder to please than the audiences back in the 70's and 80's.

You realize her character was supposed to be fourteen years old, right? Yeah well I was only 15 when I watched it. Well, then I'll allow it. But just this once! Anyway, your analysis was pretty thorough. I, meanwhile, loved all the Star Wars movies and all three of the first Rings flicks; loved the second Hobbit and thought the third was mostly solid, if overwrought and overlong. But that first Hobbit movie, man: I was bored, is all. It wasn't poorly made, or badly acted, or any of that. It just bored me to sit there, which was basically just a bizarre bummer of an experience. So I'd give Star Wars the same slight edge you gave Rings, but I don't hate any of the movies at all and 75% of them are some of my all-time favorites.

Overall, I vote for LotR, but that's not a slight against Star Wars. Both have hugely impacted our popular culture over the years with good reason. LotR made its mark on literature at the turn of the 20th century, then Star Wars revitalized cinema scraping off the overt grime and paving the way for a revolution in filmmaking, which in turn led to LotR changing the game at the beginning of the 21st century. Honestly, they complement each other quite well, rather than being rivals.

The Lord of the Rings films come close, but they could not match the shear cultural phenomenon that was Star Wars. Weirdraptor you hit the nail on the head. Star Wars impact on film is unparalleled. Perhaps what would be more interesting is ranking all six films based on quality. In my opinion it goes like this: 1. The Empire Strikes Back 2. The Fellowship of the Ring 3. Star Wars 4. Return of the Jedi 5. The Two Towers 6. The Return of the King
