The Lord of the Rings films come close, but they could not match the shear cultural phenomenon that was Star Wars. Weirdraptor you hit the nail on the head. Star Wars impact on film is unparalleled. Perhaps what would be more interesting is ranking all six films based on quality. In my opinion it goes like this: 1. The Empire Strikes Back 2. The Fellowship of the Ring 3. Star Wars 4. Return of the Jedi 5. The Two Towers 6. The Return of the King Ah, but how would you rank the prequels?

In terms of cinema, Star Wars has no doubt had the bigger impact. Everything that is the post-1977 Cinematic Era owes some kind of debt to Star Wars. In terms of culture, period, they're pretty neck and neck. After all, The Lord of the Rings has been referred to as "the book of the 20th century" by scholars and other experts. When asked, I just say "They're even" because there are so many arguments to be made for each being the alpha pack member.

Jackson and his team just did a better job than the best combination that Lucas could come up with. But in terms of cultural impact? Star Wars leads there by a large margin. Star Wars changed the movie industry and by extension popular culture around the world. This is why comparing these franchises is so hard for me. Imo at least, BB ;-)

Ah, but how would you rank the prequels? Nowhere close to either trilogy. Isn't that obvious?? lol

Well probably like this: 1: An Unexpected Journey 2: Desolation of Smaug 3: Battle of Five Armies 4: The Phantom Menace 5: Attack of the Clones 6: Revenge of the Sith Overall the Hobbit Trilogy is better than the Star Wars prequels methinks. Better storyline to work with and better performances. But Lucas and Jackson both definitely had the care factor dialled way down when making these ones.

I agree, but I know that I'm not being fair. I'm a LOTR fan. I saw the first 2 or three Star Wars movies, I liked them a lot, but then just lost interest in that movie series. Some of the other SW movies might be good, but I haven't given them a chance, nor am I interested in doing so.

This is somewhat funny because I'm picking up Rogue One tonight (east coast midnight) yet I love LOTR a tad more, even The Hobbit film were better then most SW films (Empire/Jedi being the exceptions) Right now here is my ranking of each of them. LOTR Fellowship - 10/10 LOTR Two Towers - 10/10 LOTR Return of the King - 10/10 Hobbit 1 - 8/10 Hobbit 2- 9/10 Hobbit 3 - 7.5/10 SW Episode 1 - 8/10 SW Episode 2 - 6/10 SW Episode 3 - 8/10 SW Episode 4 - 9/10 SW Episode 5- 10/10 SW Episode 6 - 9/10 SW Episode 7 - 8/10 Rogue One - 9.5/10

I say they're equal. LOTR had a far more epic story that's stood the test of time through the books and no doubt the movies will also stand the test of time. Star Wars on the other hand was able to become just as iconic and unforgettable without being based off a novel. As wierdraptor said they compliment each other rather than compete.
