2008 wasn't great but it was probably one of the best we had in awhile
2008 gave us really good films like The Strangers. Cloverfield, Dark Knight, Kung Fu Panda, Haunting of Molly Hartley, Hellboy II, Wall E & Iron Man
and 2008 also gave us stinkers like Hancock, Chronicles of Narnia, Indiana Jones, Journey to the Center of the Earth, another Mummy film, The Incredible Hulk, another Rambo film and a remake of prom night.
2008 also introduced us to five years of the horrible twilight saga
so in a way 2008 helped pave the way for the current trend of movies we have now

you think "Haunting of Molly Hartley" was a good film, and didn't like "The Incredible Hulk?"

It’ll probably only be remembered for TDK and that is all.

what do you mean helped pave the way for current "trend" of movies? if you are talking about the current Superhero craze then you are far off while Hollywood didn't start pumping out Superhero flicks pre-Iron Man. the current Superhero Movie craze was paved in the late 90s and early 00s when films like "Blade" "X-Men" and "Sam Raimis Spider Man Trilogy" had success at the Box Office and made Hollywood realize there was life outside of "Batman & Superman"

I have 14 titles on my Best of 2008. Of the 14, 8 are either non-English language or documentary. 3 of the remaining 6 are independent, limited release films. The last three might be considered major Hollywood releases.
The 3 Hollywood films are:
Me And Orson Welles / Richard Linklater (a borderline choice) Milk / Gus Van Sant Rachel Getting Married / Jonathan Demme
The 3 indie films are:
Goodbye Solo / Ramin Babrani Phoebe In Wonderland / Daniel Barnz Ballast / Lance Hammer
The 8 foreign or docu are:
The Betrayal-Nerakhoon / Ellen Kuras and Thavisouk Phrasavavath Chi Bi (Red Cliff) / John Woo Entre Les Murs (The Class) / Laurent Cantet Jerichow / Christian Petzold Kurôn Wa Kokyô Wo Mezasu (The Clone Returns Home) / Kanji Nakajima Pranzo Di Ferragosto (The Ferragosto Dinner, Mid-August Lunch) / Gianni Di Gregorio Revanche / Götz Spielmann Vals Im Bashir (Waltz With Bashir) / Ari Folman
So, 2008 will indeed be celebrated as an acclaimed year, but in Europe and Asia.

It's pretty much anyone's guess on a mainstream level which is what I assume the OP is referring to. but for me personally... 1.Gran Torino - 10/10 (the most recently released movie to get a 10/10 from me. hell, it's within my Top 3 Clint Eastwood movies straight up) 2.Felon - 9/10 (this movie seems to fly off the radar. it's the #1 prison movie if you ask me) 3.JCVD - 8/10 (Van Damme's #1 movie if you ask me although I suspect many will default to remembering him for Bloodsport (1988) or thereabouts) 4.Mesrine Part 1: Killer Instinct - 7.5-8/10 (my #1 Vincent Cassel movie) -.Taken (I think many will remember Liam Neeson for this role, especially in terms of action movies it seems this is THE movie he will be most remembered for) 6.Appaloosa - 7/10 7.Valkyrie - 6.5-7/10 -.Street Kings 9.Mesrine Part 2: Public Enemy #1 - 6-6.5/10 --.Quantum of Solace (2008) (this is a James Bond movie so that sort of seems to guarantee some level of rememberence even though it seems to be generally considered the worst of the Craig area by the majority from what I can tell) but anyways... ill remember that year, at least currently, as the most recent year that I handed out a 10/10 as there have not been any 10/10 movies since that I have seen. also, I think not all that long ago I looked at ALL years and I think 2008 was one of my stronger years for movies but I would have to recheck since things might have changed a bit since. but either way, it beats many other years for movies overall. but like jamesbamesy said, I suspect The Dark Knight will probably be something that comes to mind for those who are big into super hero movies (even if not, it's still something I think will be remembered to some degree at the least). but even that movie aside, maybe Gran Torino (2008) or Taken (2008) etc. but it's hard to predict exactly what movies will move on to be classics/still be talked about in 20-30+ years of time from 2008 (so say what movies from 2008 will still be talked about around the years 2028-2038 etc). but I do think in terms of super hero movies that The Dark Knight sounds like a safe bet (I used to think it was the best of the genre at one point but nowadays I only barely like it (now that probably goes to Wonder Woman (2017) or Batman v Superman (2016) etc).

It wasn't a very strong year, but most years don't have 2 pop culture phenomenons like The Dark Knight and Iron Man.
The Dark Knight changed the course of Christopher Nolan's career and turned him into one of the most adored mainstream directors of all time and Iron Man started the most ambitious movie franchise in history.
This is a completely objective observation from me. I am not even a big fan of Iron Man and regardless of how you feel about The Dark Knight it has certainly been ingrained into most people's minds.

When I think of 2008 in terms of film , I immediately think of The Dark Knight which was a cinematic game changer .
And honestly, the only other two films that stick out for me were The Wrestler (Rourke's tour de force performance ) and In Bruges . Yeah thats about it.
