I don't have clever rhymes like mrsehj, but here is my latest quiz anyway:
MRSEHJ, CREATOR OF MANY GREAT QUIZZES, IS NOW A WINNER OF ONE Honorable mention to JERVISTETCH, who answered a three-part question that was technically worth only one point (because I thought it would be almost impossible to get one - let alone all three). All questions were answered and without additional clues - color me impressed! Spoofs and Promos
1.) When MAD Magazine spoofed this character, they called him Captain Sterile Stupid. Captain Merrill Stubing (Gavin McLeod) of The Love Boat - MRSEHJ
2.) To celebrate an anniversary of this show, FOX network had all its shows do a shout-out to it during one particular week. For example, when HOUSE was doing a hypothetical diagnosis he used an example of two sisters – Patty and Selma. What was the show they were saluting? The Simpsons (Patty and Selma were Marge's sisters) - MRSEHJ
3.) On a single night back in the 90’s, NBC had three of its Tuesday night shows (Fired Up, Caroline in the City, and The Naked Truth) each do an episode spoofing a famous old show. Ironically, none of the shows spoofed were old NBC shows. This is an obscure question, so I’ll settle for guessing any one of the three shows spoofed. (One was an action/adventure show, one an anthology, and one involved an action hero) - Mission: Impossible (Fired Up), The Outer Limits (Caroline in the City) and Wonder Woman (The Naked Truth) - JERVISTETCH
4.) This satire series spoofed a lot of TV shows and movies, but it also had recurring characters such as Coach Hines, Miss Swan and Ms. Vancome. - MAD TV - MRSEHJ
5.) When these two shows were on CBS's Friday lineup back to back (one having just moved from NBC) I envisioned them running the following promo: A man stumbles into a house saying “That was close. That car almost me.” Melinda Gordon steps up to him and says, “It did hit you. You’re dead.” Unwilling to believe it, he runs to another woman in the house, asking if she can still see him. “Yes,” she says, “but my name is Allison Dubois and I see dead people, too.” Melinda then points to a light outside a window and says, “There’s the light. Walk toward it.” He reluctantly walks toward the light, only to bump his nose right into the window, because he’s really alive. The two women laugh hysterically. “I always wanted to do that,” whispers Melinda. What were the two shows? The Ghost Whisperer and Medium - SMILEY
6.) In a MAD magazine spoof of THE INCREDIBLE HULK, David has to dress as a woman to escape detection. When he is introduced to an old woman as David while wearing a dress, the old woman says he looks more like a Bruce. David then tells her that actually in the comics, the characters name is Bruce, but the producers didn’t think the name was manly enough. As he says this, a TV in the corner of the same panel is showing a clip of a famous Bruce doing something very manly as a contrast. But this old spoof is ironic now considering recent events. Who was the famous Bruce? Bruce Jenner was shown winning the decathlon. - MARTIN
7.) On one Saturday night on NBC in the 90’s, three comedies (Golden Girls, Empty Nest, and Nurses) all deliberately shared a common natural event, although the way it was presented defied the laws of nature. Any idea what that event was? (And it wasn’t a childbirth – it’s not that kind of “natural event.”) - All three had hurricanes - MRSEHJ
8.) A MAD magazine spoof of this show featured a scene with Moron Boobinson commenting, “Gosh, this episode has had everything but the kitchen sink,” after which a kitchen sink then crash lands onto their forgotten planet. What show were they spoofing? Lost in Space (presented as "Loused Up in Space") - JERVISTETCH
9.) A CRACKED magazine spoof of TV cops featured a convention of them gathered together to help solve a crime. Chief Ironside was constantly thwarted by this cowboy cop whose horse kept accidentally standing on his foot. Finally, Ironside demands, “Get out of here before I bust you! Not ‘arrest you’ – ‘bust you!’” Who was the cowboy cop in the spoof? Marshall Sam McCloud - MARTIN
10.) In a very early SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE sketch, one of the Not Ready for Prime Time Players was made up like an old man and went to visit the graves of all his former co-stars commenting on how they each died. At the end he said, “Why am I still alive? Because I dance,” after which he danced Zorba the Greek style. Ironically, he was the first of the troupe to die in real life. Who was he? John Belushi - MARTIN
MRSEHJ - 4 MARTIN - 3 JERVISTETCH - 2 (but one had three answers) SMILEY - 1
Additional fun facts: The Caroline in the City episode should really have been The Twilight Zone rather than The Outer Limits. It involved Caroline suddenly switching place with another character with no explanation why. Plus it had an on-screen narrator. Both of those elements fit TZ better than OL. In the ad for it, they even played the famous four notes of the Twilight Zone theme.
The Golden Girls/Empty Nest/Nurses episodes all dealing with hurricanes was labelled Hurricane Saturday. But rather than dealing with one hurricane, they had one hurricane pass through followed by a different hurricane within the space of an hour or so. As far as I know that's ridiculous, if not impossible.
