I don't consider Patriot Games a sequel to The Hunt for Red October.
Isn't that kind of like saying The Silence of the Lambs is a sequel to Manhunter?

Alec Baldwin was supposed to reprise his role but had a falling out with the producers
James Earl Jones also reprised his role I didn't know that. I forgot that James Earl Jones was in both. Though I don't consider Batman Forever a sequel to Tim Burton's Batman movies and that is a similar situation.

I'm trying to remember but aren't the films out of sequence though at least as far as Clancy intended them? Been a long time since I read the books.

Logan is a R rated sequel to a PG-13 movie. Closest other example I could think of.
