I don't think that A&W is wholly defunct, but it has been taken into the mega conglomerate that runs KFC, Taco Bell ... and, possibly more. And, there are very few of that, particular, franchise left. I loved it, when I was in college in the 60's. (Hey, we were young, and poor. ) There were two that were very near our campus, a sorority sister worked at one of them. Several of us could chip-in $.50/$1.00, and she would bring home a "submarine" sandwich that was delicious, and could be sliced to feed a crowd. "Papa Burgers," and "Mama Burgers," were also great! The last time that I had a burger from A&W, was about 10 years ago. It was just a burger. Things change. Interesting. Here in the Montreal area (I don't know about the rest of Quebec or Canada) A&W has expanded exponentially in the past two or three years. They are everywhere now. Ya there's a lot more A & Ws than before. Popeyes is expanding even more than that. One chain that's closed lots of locations is Burger King.

It hasn't reached Montreal yet, I don't think.

I'm a Californian living in Pennsylvania after spending 10 years Washington state.
I can't think of any places that are completely 100% Defunct but More so places like Sizzler that I wish had way more locations Yoshinoya Japanese Kitchen, formerly Yoshinoya Beef Bowl, is another. The Majority of their locations are in southern California
Another restaurant I liked called Claim Jumper. They have like only 30 locations

One of Pizza Nova or Pizza Pizza might be next followed by Subway.

Shoney's had a similar meal years ago, pop corn shrimp with T bone steak and a side order of fries. It was my go to at that place when we stopped there. Haven't been there in 10 years so they might of changed the menu.
