What’s the verdict on this one? Had a lot of controversy leading up to its release. I remember the house being packed with kids in the front row. Visually beautiful but exists as nothing more than non-stop violence for two hours. I’m not sure what the point was. Maybe if I was religious it would have greater meaning but stands as a movie that’ll never make it to a second viewing.

Never saw it and I probably never will. I just don't think I could watch a movie about a man being brutally butchered for two and half hours.

It has good cinematography and a good soundtrack by Peter Gabriel. It's primarily made for believers. If it were for general audiences, Gibson would've done a regular biopic instead of obsessing over the pain and suffering of a few days. One viewing was enough for me.

There is no final "verdict" anymore than there is a final verdict on religion right now. But yeah, truly getting it depends on how/if you perceive the Bible. There were multiple layered points to the violence. One, to show just how ugly and cruel humanity can get. Two, to show that despite the things that we do, Jesus loves us no matter what. Three, it depicts the story of a God who loves us so much that he chose to walk with us, with the worst of the worst of us, and call us his brothers and sisters, and suffer with us, suffer unimaginably with us and for us, to show us that God does indeed care, that there is hope of something better at the end of this life. Because it lacked a condemnation narrative it is not the favorite of conservatives, nor is it the favorite of the non-religious for obvious reasons, but for the theology it presents, and for its artistic prowess, it is one of my favorite movies.

It's one of the best religious films I have ever seen. However, it's not a rewatchable one. James Cavaziel was excellent as Jesus. I did appreciate the cinematography and the use of Aramaic and Latin dialects so it's more historically accurate.

I've seen it when I was 13 years old with my Catholic School. We all got permission from our parents to see it at the movie theaters and I was traumatized yet moved by the film.

I love it, my favorite snuff film Out of its endless brutality, it’s when the chunk of flesh is ripped off his back. Jesus Christ!

I am a big fan.
I am not particularly religious, but I love Bible stories and Mel Gibson's directing is fantastic imo.
Powerful visceral storytelling. At one point I got so upset I had to leave the cinema and then I came back after a few minutes.
Note: Only people who are religious will get the point of the movie. The point is to show how much Jesus loves us and how much he suffered for us. That is why the movie is so violent.

You are thinking of The Last Temptation of Christ. The Passion of the Christ has a good score too, but it is composed by John Debney.

Never saw it and I probably never will. I just don't think I could watch a movie about a man being brutally butchered for two and half hours. The Via Crucis sequence doesn't begin until the midway point if I am not mistaken. There is violence before that, but it doesn't become unrelenting until the walk to Calvary.

Besides it being FAR better made than most religious films, what also sets it apart from the movies you are talking about is that it is actually a story from the Bible. I mean it is really just taking a story from the Bible and drawing it out for dramatic affect, unlike those horribly written modern propaganda films you usually watch. The only thing in The Passion of the Christ that some find offensive is it's portrayal of Jewish people. I think Mel Gibson handles the material fairly, but many disagree.

Not all biblical films I would say are better though. The Nativity Story was boring as hell.
