whenver I rewatch it I mostly dig it. The ending is really the only really bad part IMO

I actually enjoyed the film too...
I don't think the ending is bad... It's just confusing!
It took me a few viewings to understand what the ending meant, and that because of the time anomaly it does make sense.
I was hoping for a sequel to resolve it.

Up until the ending, it was a 4/10. After it ended, it was a 2/10.

It's watchable although in the end it's just OK even with the bad ending.

I feel the same way! It was fine until the ending.
It's one of those situations where an ending to a movie can make or break the film, depending on the circumstances.

I don’t think I’ve rewatched it. Was never a big fan of Planet of the Apes movies until Rise.

I thought it was OK. The villain was pretty well handled and it's better than most of the 70s entries (with the notable exception of the fabulously over-the-top Beneath the Planet of the Apes). A middle-of-the-road instalment of the franchise.

I only liked the ending, actually.

The problem with the ending is that there is no explanation in detail on how it could be done. It's just done.

Planet of the Apes (2001) - 6.5/10
The movie has very eerie atmosphere, fantastic art direction (much better than the original), great make-up (also much better than the original), a good score by Danny Elfman and good performances from most of the cast. I especially like the way the apes still act very animal-like and Tim Roth displays this very effectively.
My main problem with the movie is Mark Wahlberg, who is miscast and just isn't very good in the movie.
I don't even hate the ending.
It makes no sense, but it has a very nightmare-ish feel to it.

Never been interested in it (although the makeup is really good). Wahlberg is annoying and you can't touch the original. There's no point trying to do it more faithful to the book either because it isn't that good and the book ending is notas impressive as the movie and even Boule said he wished he had come up with it. The only things in the book that would have been interesting to see in a movie are the bits where the naked woman appears and tears apart the chimp they brought with them on the trip and the scene where two gorillas are sweeping cages and the human starts talking for the first time and they are so shocked they laugh hysterically.

It's obvious that the time anomaly plays a big part in the ending, but how Thade could have gotten to Earth is what makes no sense. Yes, the time anomaly plays a huge part in the first film... If you pay close attention to the sequence of events, it partly explains itself... (FUTURE) EARTH: 1.) The Chimp Leaves. ==> 2.) Mark Leaves. ==> 3.) The Ship Leaves. ==> Planet Of the Apes: 3.) The Ship Arrives. ==> 2.) Mark Arrives. ==> 1.) The Chimp Arrives. ==> 0.) Mark Departs. ==> -1) Thade Escapes(PAST) EARTH: -1) Thade Lincoln ==> 0.) Mark Encounters New Cliffhanger Timeline! ==> "Planet Of The Apes 2"The time anomaly reverses the events between the two planets. So the only question is: "How was Thade able to escape the Planet Of The Apes"? I just assumed, he found another pod inside the ship, and used it to escape. And since he was the last person to the leave the Planet Of The Apes, the time anomaly allowed him to be the first person to arrive on Earth, back in the mid 1800s. And that he was able to create a new Planet Of The Apes, right here on Earth... Now, while that seems unlikely to happen in just 150 years, it's not impossible. Mark actually arrives in our present day, but in the alternate timeline. Since the film ended up in a cliffhanger... I assumed that "Planet Of The Apes 2" would have explained all that, and then Mark would have "tried" to resolve the situation...

I assumed that "Planet Of The Apes 2" would have explained all that, and then Mark would have "tried" to resolve the situation... Yes, but that leaves 2 questions that are hard to get around. 1. How does Thade get out of the room he is locked in? 2. How does he know how to fly a space pod? Plus, why would the escape pod still even work? That ship has been stranded there for thousands of years. I am not sure if we are understanding the time events the same way, but let's see. Thade takes off in a space pod and enters the time storm, he gets sent back in time to the 1700's and leads an ape revolt etc. Even if that is the case it is still very silly that the apes have invented the exact same technologies that the humans would have in that time period.

People hate on it for the simple fact that it is a "remake."
Except it isn't a remake. It is a different adaptation of the book. A sillier, dumber adaptation, but it is still quite entertaining and it is so uniquely different that it works on it's own terms in many ways.
The problem people seem to have is the movie is that it ignores the political commentary of the original series and focuses more on the human characters than the apes, but that series still exists. Burton's movie isn't erasing the earlier films (and it is no worse than Beneath the Planet of the Apes), it just turns it into a more straight-forward sci-fi/horror movie.
I am not quite sure why people have such a huge problem with it.

I prefer his style, make up, design, environment to the CGI Rise of the Planet of the Apes Trilogy.
Now, the stories in the new trilogy were better obviously, but I mean the costumes, style, environment etc are much better in the Burton version.

I like all of it, including the ending, I don't understand why its so disliked. I find it more entertaining than the last 2 planet of the apes that have recently come out, they are incredibly boring.

I thought it was fine. I didn;t have a problem with the ending except that it seemed to assume there would be a sequel.
I like the latest ones way better though. It's probably become the most solid trilogy I've seen since LOTR.
