What’s the verdict on this one? The acting is overwrought but not surprising for a silent film. 90 years haven’t diminished its themes. It’s also an absolute visual dream and a landmark for visual effects.

It's one of my favorite science fiction films of all time. The visual effects and production design were extraordinarily well done, and the theme of class warfare in our society remains timeless.

Its a brilliant movie
Also it does not matter if its made in 1927 a good movie is a good movie no matter what year it was made.

Classic. 95% of silent acting is somewhat overwrought. Actors had to display emotion without dialogue or inflection. It was overdone for the most part. Metropolis was one of the pinnacles of the silent German Expressionist films. I actually think Germany did silents better than Hollywood.

Fantastic movie, and still just as relevant and timely 90 years later.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is probably my favorite.
Love the silents

One thing I love about silent films is the music.

It's a visually arresting movie and the first science fiction epic. I respect it greatly, even though I'm not much of a silent movie fan.

How can it be considered anything other than a timeless classic?

A landmark achievement in cinema. I've seen it four times at the science fiction marathon I attend. There is 2010 restoration cut that is as complete as we've ever going to get, and they showed that in 2017.

I'm not a big silent movie fan but I love this one. Have you seen the Lost World? It's like King Kong without apes! (Although it does actually have monkeys. But they're normal sized so they don't count)

I have seen The Mysterious Island (1929) which has a couple of sound scenes but is mostly silent and is amazing.
