Nicholas Cage? A lot of people either really like or are turned off by his over the top acting.

not "most" but one of the names that come up in "discussions"
John Wayne
some people seem to be obsessed with politics and focus on personal stuff and ignore a body of great movies and a long and productive lifetime of acting.

Many either LOVE or HATE Katharine Hepburn. Have never figured out the antipathy to her …. but ….

Yeah but I've also heard him criticized for his limited range. Ask someone to name their favorite non-Western John Wayne film and they'll probably give you a blank stare.

Might just mean they have not seen the many non-westerns that he made … Casting in certain genre's does not necessarily mean limited ability to perform in others. Wayne did just fine in many types of roles. (imo)

After Cage, I'd probably go with Kristen Stewart.

I don't really see him being polarizing as he seems to be generally liked (and he's been in plenty of good movies) short of his Scientology stuff and the flip out on Oprah in 2005 which I imagine damaged his image to some degree as it seems like around that time his popularity declined some although I am sure it's still good enough as in terms of a great career I think Cruise is pretty much the gold standard as not many can challenge him in terms of longevity/filmography.
so at the end of the day... I am confident there are more polarizing actors out there than Cruise especially if you stick to general screen presence etc as I would have to assume most people like him given his level of popularity in general.

I generally like Nicolas Cage as he's got a better overall presence than most but it does seem like some people might not like him.
but another person who comes to mind for this kind of topic... Keanu Reeves ; I personally like his overall presence but some seem to think he sucks and call him a 'bad actor'. but in terms of overall presence, he's not a bad actor if you ask me as while he might not have a wide range I think he beats most A-listers if you ask me in overall presence in the right role etc.
p.s. but I will say some around here who I feel get a bit too much praise... Daniel Day-Lewis/Christian Bale as they are not as good as they are made out to be overall as their presence is not as good all around as many other A-listers if you ask me. they might work occasionally but they seem to be more of that technical kind of acting than just having a solid natural presence/charisma kind of acting, which is generally superior over a wider range of movies if you ask me. I would take someone with charisma (and the like) over more of that technical kind of acting any day of the week.

I was thinking Nicolas Cage before I clicked. He is an interesting actor who is _capable_ of great performances. And even when he's awful, at least he's hilariously and entertainingly awful so maybe not even awful.

DiCaprio used to be extremely polarizing as the "pretty boy from Titanic." He seems to have gained more respect from working with Scorsese, etc.
The actors from Twilight.
