Mia Farrow - "Death on the Nile" Jamie Lee Curtis - "Halloween" (More for the nostalgia/sentimental aspect, though JLC was pretty good.) Carrie Snodgrass - "The Fury" Veronica Cartwright - "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" Lee Grant -"Damien: Omen 2" Genevieve Bujold - "Coma" (probably my fave lead performance from the year.) Maureen Stapleton - "Interiors" Meryl Streep - "The Deer Hunter"
special nod to Miss June Fairchild, aka "The Ajax Lady"!!!!
I know most of these are supporting, but I could not think of that many lead actress performances that I really liked.

No wonder comediennes struggle to win the Best Actress Oscar. Just look at that wealth of tears.

No wonder comediennes struggle to win the Best Actress Oscar. Just look at that wealth of tears. I much prefer drama performances. It just struck me as a fan of Madeline Kahn, Diane Keaton, Carol Kane, Cheryl Smith, Anjelica Huston, Teri Garr, Cindy Williams, Linnea Quigley, Julie Hagerty, Beverly D'Angelo, Bernadette Peters etc. how difficult it is even for great American actresses of a comedic bent to break through with the Academy.
But, you can always win a Supporting Oscar with a slice of luck, that's more equivalent to fair game, I feel.

We are not the Academy. This is about favorite performances and personal preference.

If you looked through all of the posts of these I made, you would see plenty of comedic performances listed. You have to take into account that people here probably haven't seen some of the performances you are talking about for 1978.

I didn't mean to misrepresent anyone. Sorry about that. I believe in any fair democratic vote, the best candidate is the one with the most votes.

The Academy has always shown extreme preference for drama over comedy. It's glaring and obvious. Oh, well.
