Because o the Hayes Code, film makers were restricted to what kind of sexual imagery they could show (even a kiss was only allowed to last a certain amount of time). I forget which movie, but Mae West was famous for "Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"

"Dodsworth" is pre-Hayes, and there's a lot of talk about infidelity, but I'm not sure if there were any jokes like that.
