They are your protagonists and supporting characters. They are more or less a person just like yourself. We seen their good sides almost al of the time. The incidents in which you speak happen years before we meet them in the film. They seem like genuinely kindhearted people.

I don't recall feeling sorry for Red in all the times i've watched the film but i did feel sorry for Brooks who did his time but couldn't handle life outside after spending so long behind bars. It's sad he would rather have spent the rest of his life inside rather than be free. red on the other hand handled being out a little better and found his friend in the end

I think the movie does a good job of showing that everyone except Andy deserved to be there.
This is different from people having empathy for them or even liking them.
People are not entirely defined by their actions.

I think the movie does a good job of showing that everyone except Andy deserved to be there. This is different from people having empathy for them or even liking them. People are not entirely defined by their actions. In the case of Red, he knows and admits at the final hearing that he was young and stupid, and saw that what he did was wrong. He's known it for some time. He is reformed and redeemed. He also protected Andy. So, you can have empathy for a person who, as a kid, did a really stupid and terrible thing, and realizes as time goes by how stupid his actions were.

I never felt sorry for Brooks or Red. It was a shame that Brooks couldn't be rehabilitated but that's the extent of my emotionally investment in his character.

Because at the end of the day, they're still people. They're not monsters. Prison is supposed to be a place of rehabilitation. That despite committing a crime, the prisoners are still people and should be treated as such.

I feel sorry for Elmo Blatch. He's just misunderstood and I'm sure he's a real sweet guy if you give him a chance.

If more of them were innocent like Andy then yes, but as it is I think we're just supposed to relate to them. They don't seem like bad people despite their crimes.

I've never met or heard anyone saying that they felt sorry for Red. The guy was doing very well in prison and didn't seem to have any problems. Even if had been innocent and had been wrongfully sent to prison, people still wouldn't have felt sorry for him.
The main thing is we the audience never see Red or Brooks commit their actual crimes. We just hear about Red's but never know about Brooks'. Red was young when he did his crime and he admits that he regrets what he did. Brooks has been in there for a long time and both come across as nice guys. So it is easier for the audience to accept and maybe even forgive these two.
The person that most people feel sorry for is the chubby guy in the beginning who gets beaten to death by Captain Hadley.

Dad anyone feel bad for Hadley when he was rounded up after the corruption was exposed?
