I saw the Mona Lisa painting in person at the Louvre, and it was quite beautiful.

I don't get the whole artsy fartsy thing, but from I understand, the Mona Lisa is more about technique than beauty.

While some religious paintings can be good here and there etc, I think general art paintings like Mona Lisa (and the like) are overrated as it's a wonder how some paintings are worth a boatload of $ is beyond me. it's like even if I had major money to burn I doubt I would care about the vast majority of that stuff.
sure, some people have talent, as you can tell some people are good at what they do, but still, I just can't see how some peoples paintings are worth a boatload of $ but yet some people, who are good artists (like can paint/draw well etc and are in the ball park of those high $ paintings), ain't worth jack in comparison. makes no sense.

Art don't have to be beautiful necessarily. Some very ugly subjects can be great art. But the Mona Lisa is only famous because it was stolen in 1911 and recovered two years later.

I don't believe the Mona Lisa is a very beautiful painting, but then, that's hardly surprising. There's a well-known theory going around that the Mona Lisa is in fact a heavily disguised self-portrait. It appears that Leonardo da Vinci may have been quite the practical joker. Certainly, it may not be the only example of his sense of humour.

I think it's more about the technique and the history of the painting rather than the beauty of the subject that makes it famous. Da Vinci made some other more beautiful paintings in my opinion.

Where is Charlton Heston? He's irritating Rex Harrison by taking too long to paint the Sistine Chapel. He's a sculptor, not a painter!
