It's the one Disney Renaissance film where I just don't see what the big deal is. I thought the songs were mostly forgettable, maybe with the exception of Be Prepared and the story was just a re-telling of Hamlet with animals.
IN NO WAY am I criticizing people for liking it, I was just wondering what it is about this film that people take to so strongly.

The Hamlet inspired story (I find it very odd that you are criticizing it for this) The beautiful animation Hans Zimmer's fantastic score Scar (Jeremy Irons's voice-work is all time great and so is the visual design of the character) Timone and Pumba The songs (especially "Be Prepared") The all time great opening scene The editing
It has the strongest personality of all the Disney animated movies imo.

It appeals the the broadest audience.
-Girls like romance with Nala and Simba -Men relate to the Father/Son story -Hamlet appeals to intellectual. -Moses appeals to spiritual. -Circle of Life appeals to the reincarnation. -Everyone can relate to growing up and finding yourself then coming home. -Animals represent different cultures and races.

The story is more dramatic and epic than standard animation fare produced in the United States. It has a great message about responsibility and learning from the past. The animation is beautiful. The songs by Elton John and Tim Rice are fairly memorable; "Circle of Life" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" are my most favorites. Hans Zimmer's score is tremendously good and gives the movie a spiritual feel. The death of Mufasa is very emotional and Scar is a pretty good villain.

Probably gonna end up repeating points already made here, but I'll add my two cents anyway.
- Fantastic soundtrack awash with iconic songs. - Fantastic animation. - Strong characterisation and excellent voice work. - A memorable band of villains. - An emotionally impacting story-line. The death of Mufasa was to Renaissance era Disney what the death of Bambi's mother was to vintage Disney. - The film constitutes one of Disney's most epic narratives. - Talking animal films are always popular among kids, especially when well made. - Finally, the film was extremely well marketed back in the mid-90s and this ensured that it became a pop culture hit.

Criticizing it for being a retelling of Hamlet is odd in relation to the rest of the Disney Renaissance, which was of course comprised entirely of famous fairy takes and stories.
There's no accounting for taste, but I'd say it has far and away the most memorable soundtrack. Not a filler song in the bunch.

Not because it's not as good it's just the other songs are kind of like pop culture references circle of Life can't wait to be King hakuna matata everyone remembers these.

I actually think all the songs are memorable. Most of them would be a good contender for the best.
It’s the second best animated film from Disney, IMO (with the exclusion of Pixar of course).

Well the other movies are at least honest about it, unlike The Lion King which pretends that it's original. The second is based on Romeo and Juliet and the third one is an homage to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. I don't think they're trying to hide the Hamlet/Shakespeare connection.

Visually Beautiful with stunning opening scenery and terrific music
BUT
The Disney Company had to go into its Habitual and unrelenting mode of Kill the Parent, Exile the Child because of a lie , and classic Disney bully of a villain with assorted "comic" henchmen.
Never understood its popularity.
