It's probably got to do with longterm business plans by Amazon. They would like to have a platform that directly links to their products ( Dvd/BluRay/VOD/merchandise/etc). Maybe they will soon augment the IMDB site with a different kind of message board that suits that purpose?

There's no evidence to prove they exist. But there's also no evidence to prove that they don't. It's all connected, MAN! It's the aliens, MAN, the aliens! They're after us, controlling out every move! Don't trust the police, the government, or even your friends and family! They're all in on the conspiracy, MAN! I'm using too many exclamation marks, MAN! I'm waiting for my English teachers from high school to track me down and stop me from using them.... MAN! (Oh, good Lord. I actually knew a person who spoke like this and believed this stuff. I'm not joking, God help us.)

Anyone remember the term "Internet 2.0" or maybe "Web 2.0"? IMDb taking down its message boards is just another sign that the 2.0 experiment failed (as far as corporations are concerned). It seems there is an increasing number of cases where websites are disabling the ability for readers to interact.
I stand by my belief that IMDb did the wrong thing. They had the ability to foster a healthy community of loyal users, and they threw that away because they weren't able to see its full potential.
