I'm a horror movie fan and horror movies often deal with issues surrounding the "blame game", not owning up to your own crimes and failings, or the demonisation of "the other". Political wings can exploit anger and hatred when a community is feeling poor and feels disenfranchised.
What are some of your favourite movies about demonisation and persecution?
'Freaks' (1932)
Thanks.

Hi petrolino, I might not have fully understood the meaning of the topic. Are we to suggest movies in which certain people or a group of people are treated with disdain by either a more powerful group of people or simply by the system? Sansho the Bailiff (1954) I believe provides such a case. As many have to suffer because of the feudal nature of then prevailing Japanese society. In fact, many of the Kenji Mizoguchi movies might qualify. That is if I understood the topic correctly.

I figure it's a bit like saying to somebody working on an assembly line, "Hey, some investment bankers wrecked the rich economy with extreme greed and reckless behaviour, playing poker with other peoples' money while laughing on cocaine. You know who's solely to blame for this economic downturn and period of austerity? Immigrants stealing your jobs and undercutting your wages, and nobody else. Go get them, now."

Rivalrous tribes demonize one another in Lawrence of Arabia. And TE comes to loathe Johnny Turk.

THE DEVILS 1971-a charismatic, well-meaning but personally flawed leader of a society is destroyed in a scandal stoked by institutional outcasts, corrupt rulers, and scheming advisers: the outcome-the society itself is destroyed. A simple interpretation is that it is a criticism of organized religion or the power of the state over the individual, mob rule etc. but I think Russell was thinking along more subversive lines that went over the heads of Warner Bros!

I'm thinking Black Legion fits the bill. It's a classic portrayal of the "native" factory worker feeling like he's being passed over for promotion because of immigrants. The Black Legion is basically a thinly disguised KKK although I think it was an actual terrorist group at one point in time. Parts of this film are genuinely creepy, especially when Bogart's character is forced at gun point to sign the oath. I was also thinking of Matewan, especially when the union organizer is trying to bridge the gap between the original coal miners and the Italian and African Americans that move in to take their jobs, but who eventually join forces against the coal company.
