If a guy who has one of these "half one year then half the next year" hitting streaks ever made a serious run at DiMaggio's record, you can bet there will be a MAJOR bitchfest from the media and Yankees fans.
Not saying they would be wrong, but there will be lots of complaining and moaning.
They would be as fast to change the rule as much as they wanted to change the electoral college after Trump's victory.

Regardless of how one feels about a split-season hitting streak, Merrifield continuing the streak tonight with a surprise bunt single with a guy on 3rd was way cool. That's Millar's kind of baseball right there.

Me the Yankees fan was just questioning the legitimacy of a hitting streak continued from a previous season. Technically it is legitimate, of course, but doesn't seem right if he breaks Joltin' Joe's record through two seasons (as a Yankees fan, of course). The 56 would still be the record for a single season unless he can get more than 56 in this season.

The 56 would still be the record for a single season unless he can get more than 56 in this season. 56 straight games with a hit is a record, no matter if its continuation or not. There's no real advantage to having a 20 game streak to end the season and then picking it u[ next year. Not like it was the talking point of the off season "Holy Heroin, Whit Merrifield has a 20 game hit streak". I truly doubt that Joe D is in any danger anyway. The truly amazing thing about the Streak is that no one has come close. In context, 44 games is light years from 56. It's being talked about now. With every extension, it gets talked about more. Let it get to 40 and it will be national news. And the pressure will double at 41, double at 42 it will be unfathomable at 44 and 45. And then you have 11 to tie 12 to beat the Yankee Clipper.
If DiMaggio hadn't been shut put in Game 57, the streak would have been 73, he had a 16 game one after. No one would have ever came close. It would be like the 19th Century pitching records, 59 win in a season, 513 strikeout in a season. Untouchable.
Jimmy Rollins 38 games streak is in the record books

No hit for Whit. 0-4 he won't get another AB unless the Mariners tie or go ahead.
