I think it has a lot more going for it than most may give it credit for. It still has one of the most strongest and atmospheric (even in daytime) openings that is genuinely creepy and nerve-wracking, than most horror films post-2000 which, I'd argue, began relying on gruesome gore and imagery over suspense and tension. And overall, it's pretty good at sustaining that tension up till probably the second half where admitting it does follow suit of some of the horror tropes. But Justin Long and Gina Philips have great chemistry and are fun to watch and I don't think the dynamic they had would have worked as well if they were boyfriend and girlfriend instead of siblings. It's something rare in modern horror films and they're genuinely likable as well as characters. I still think it's a great horror film, and it's ashamed what the sequels did though. Jeepers Creeper 3 was appalling to say the least. JC2 wasn't horrible, but it's biggest mistake was showing the Creeper too much, and it really loses the creep factor to it.

Great review. This is a favourite of mine and definitely up there with the best horror of the 21st century. The Creeper is such an awesome villain and I really like the two leads a lot as well.

I really enjoyed Jeepers Creepers. I thought the plot, actors, script, and action were all good.

Pretty much agree, though I have trouble separating the art from the artist and just can't bring myself to revisit it. The first half had me on the edge of my seat (at least back when I saw it), which is a pretty remarkable accomplishment, all flaws aside. I barely remember the second one, just that it had kind of a cool opening? but then got all weird and creepy. 3 was one of the lousiest pieces of shit I've ever streamed on Netflix, which really says something.

I agree James. I liked 'Jeepers Creepers' and thought the Creeper was a great villain and could have been used to make a whole franchise of these movies just like 'A Nightmare On Elm Street' and 'Friday the 13th' with Freddy Kreuger and Jason Vorhees for example but I think they made a mistake not getting Trish back for the sequel and waiting so many years to make a third movie. I don't understand why there was such a big hold up for the third movie when they were talking about making it ages ago and I think that hurt the franchise. By the way did you know the Creeper was originally supposed to talk and sing the song, 'Jeepers Creepers' in the first movie?

A film of two halves for me.
Loved the first half, then it all fell apart for me.
5/10

The third movie was in production hell because of the Victor Salva controversies but finally it came out and...yeah it is a letdown.

Solid horror film all around with a fantastic villain. The sequel wasn't so good and I never saw the third one. I remember there being talk of a prequel for a long time, but that never happened.

I agree it had a great opening and the relationship between them was good--but once the creeper was introduced I think it lost momentum. A case where the mystery was so much more intriguing than the revelation. For a movie I only saw once 20 years ago on tv, it did stick in the memory.

A highly effective, truly modern horror. I'm undecided as to its quality, not being a professional in these things. Maybe it's truly great. In a class by itself, for sure. I've never seen any horror remotely like it, or one that worked as well as Jeepers Creepers did. The use of relationships; its presentation of characters the viewer could feel for and identify with, was an enormous asset. The film's idiosyncrasies didn't really annoy me. I took it all in, accepted it for what it was; and by the time it ended I felt like I'd actually been through something myself. A wild ride it was. I can't imagine anyone seeing this film and feeling somehow "cheated" when it was over (y'know, like "that's all?", "isn't there more?", "when's it really gonna begin?"), el al.

I quite enjoyed the first one too...I think. I haven't watched it in a long time, but I seem to recall thinking that it did a fairly decent job of creating tension/atmosphere in that it let certain scenes slowly build up. It took its time with certain scenes/moments, which I thought were quite effective (sometimes this works in horror-type movies, other times...not so much. Like, for example, just having a character wander around corridors aimlessly for a long time gets old after a while). But what I found particularly interesting was how the movie was able to create an 'unsettling' feeling when, in some instances, it was broad daylight. Anyway, I think I didn't mind the brother and sister characters, and quite liked their dynamic. I particularly remember liking Gina Philips as Trish. I was just relieved that at the end it was her brother who was taken/had his eyes removed and not her. I was wondering how she was featured in the third film. According to the Trivia section on the IMDB page for the movie, it's only a cameo, but supposed to set up her character for any future movies. I only really have interest in finding out what happens with her (the sole reason I checked out the second film was because an actress I liked from the TV series Supernatural had a main role in it).

You bring up a good point about the Victor Salva controversies but still I am surprised the studio didn't just replace him with other people and keep the franchise going 'cause that is what has happened with a lot of other Horror franchises and few still have the creators running them.

Too bad it grew up to be a huge disappointment.

I think that's a great point you make about daytime, the terror actually works especially during the day time scenes here, - the driving sequences are super, it's a great day time sequence that shows you aren't safe from it whatever the hour. I liked it a lot when I first saw it on the big screen and admired what they did with the final, brave touch I felt. Yet subsequent viewings do indeed show the second half to be something of a let down.
I wrote this review many years ago >
Indeed, where did you get those eyes?
Siblings Darius and Trish are driving home from college through rural America. They have a brief run in on the road with the driver of a beat up van, later on, on the road side, they observe weird goings-on from the driver of said van, an observation that puts both of them in immense danger.
Jeepers Creepers tips its hat off to the creepy horror movies that were all the rage in the 70s and early 80s, boasting genuine suspense and characters fully formed, Jeepers Creepers is something of a refreshing antidote to the ream of horror movies available that line up teenagers purely to be slasher fodder. Lifting it just above average is the fact that our two sibling protagonists have viable discussions before venturing into the realm of horror staple requirements, although the picture is "B" movie in substance, it does however attempt to be credible in its story telling.
Sadly though, after a wonderfully edgy first half, the picture drops down in standard, the introduction of "The Creeper" may well be a necessity, but it shifts the film to such a degree, it rapidly loses its creepy momentum. Not that the second half of the film is a disaster, far from it, it's got a scary fun vibe to it, it's just that it promises so much, but ultimately runs out of steam. Jeepers Creepers was successful enough to spawn inferior sequels, with the "Creeper" of the piece firmly entering the horror hall of fame, thus an argument for the film having done its job seems totally viable, it's just sad that it didn't stay on the side of edgy and become a horror classic. 6/10

It is too bad the third movie turned out to be a disappointment 'cause the franchise had potential as many fans have said and could have been the next 'Nightmare On Elm Street' or 'Friday the 13th.' I don't know if you have heard but 'Jeepers Creepers 4' is apparently still going through and while the third movie was disappointed it must have gotten enough interest from fans for them to make a fourth one. I remember reading there were plans for 3 and 4 when the third movie was announced and unlike the third Trish was supposed to be the main star. Hopefully this one is better than the last.

This is like the Full Metal Jacket of horror movies in that it starts so good and then the second half is such a letdown. I actually prefer the second film just because I think it's more consistent. Basically a slasher movie set on a school bus.
I'll echo that the brother and sister had great chemistry, and it's a damn shame the third one wasted a chance to bring Trish back in favor of some midquel bullsh*t.
