I can see it possibly, i love Brando but damn would've been a prime role for Douglas as well.

I don't really see it to be honest. I think he could have made a good Willard if the film was made in like the 50's though.

I would’ve liked to have seen Burt Lancaster as Kurtz.

Kirk Douglas pulling off Kurtz sounds like it would have been a completely different kind of movie.

Sure in the original ending. Douglas would be more convincing shouting about his loins while firing a machine gun at choppers than Brando.

Can't see it either. Kirk Douglas is too much of a ham. And of course Brando ad libbed quite a bit of his dialog.

Nah, I don't really see it. I was thinking of Max von Sydow. He would have been a good age for a Colonel (late 40s at the time) and has a menacing presence.

I would’ve liked to have seen Burt Lancaster as Kurtz. i like that actually, he'd be more of a subversion.

Was Kirk Douglas up for the part of Colonel Kurtz? Harvey Keitel was signed to play Captain Willard, but Coppola replaced him with Martin Sheen after shooting began. I never heard of anyone except Brando being considered for Kurtz.
I guess Douglas could have done it. He was pretty good at milking a scene for everything he could get.

Lee Marvin and Orson Welles apparently said no.
