What are some sequels that don't follow the previous film (or films), at all? And by that I mean nothing whatsoever, like no characters returning or continuity with the prior installments. Movies like Pet Sematary Two and The Rage: Carrie 2 don't count because they at least mention the events of the originals. And movies that ignore other sequels don't count either, such as New Nightmare and Halloween '18, because they still feature characters from previous entries. I'm looking for movie sequels with an entirely original premise that doesn't connect whatsoever to the other films that came before. Off the top of my head:
Halloween III: Season of the Witch Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II Prom Night IV: Deliver Us From Evil Silent Night, Deadly Night 4 and 5 House II: The Second Story Curse II: The Bite Troll 2 An American Werewolf in Paris Most of the Howling sequels.
Any others?

Children of the Damned is ostensibly a sequel to Village of the Damned, despite having nothing to do with it.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre III and Next Generation are basically just remakes.
The only actual sequel to the original is the horrible Texas Chainsaw 3D, which picks up immediately after the events of the first film and then jumps ahead 20 years.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch
And I think it can be fairly argued the Evil Dead 2 is actually a comedic reimagining of Evil Dead (1)
Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (LOL)

One that comes to mind is Open Water 2: Adrift. I think it was originally titled just "Adrift". Crappy movie nonetheless.
It's been a long time since I saw any of the straight to DVD American Pie films, but is there anything that links them to the theatrical films? Maybe a brief appearance by Eugene Levy or some other supporting cast member?

I would say "Heavy Metal 2000", even though I only saw it once long ago. Although you can argue it's a remake, it really has nothing to do with the first "Heavy Metal" movie made back in 1981.
George Romero's 'dead' movies aren't direct sequels, but do follow the same rotting away world. Even their movie taglines somewhat interlock the movies as a quadrilogy ("Night became Dawn, Dawn became Day" etc). The movies have no real connection to each other, minus the fan theory that Captain Rhodes in "Day of the Dead" is the same cameo policeman in "Dawn of the Dead". Though it is the same actor and the timeline would fit. And minus the cameo of seeing zombie Machete in "Land of the Dead".
"C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud", like "Evil Dead 2", makes a serious horror movie into a horror-comedy, but worse. I hated the sequel to "C.H.U.D.", as I only saw it once and forgot most of the movie. The first movie was awesome.
I don't remember there being any whatsoever connection between the remake of "Fright Night" and it's sequel, "Fright Night 2". I thought they had something going, as the first two original movies tied the head vampires into being brother & sister. Awesome twist. Where as in here, "Fright Night 2" the remake's sequel, named it's female vampire antagonist Gerri. Which is the same name as the head vampire in the first movie, Jerry. It's direct-to-dvd release also had 'bad' written all over it, ha.
That's all I got as of now, old post but I thought I'd give my opinion.

This one will always be debated as whether a sequel or a remake. Bruce Campbell joked people would think Ash would be stupid enough to go back to the cabin. From what I understand, the opening with Ash and Linda is meant to be a recap of the original film (despite fewer characters). When Ash wakes up in the dirty puddle, that's when the sequel begins.

The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission The Dirty Dozen: The Deadly Mission The Dirty Dozen: The Fatal Mission
Godzilla films in the Millennium Series are all stand alone films, even though Godzilla: Tokyo SOS does feature the Mechagodzilla from the previous film. They ignore the Heisei Series and the Shōwa Series except for the original film.
Godzilla films in the Heisei Series ignore all the films from the Shōwa Series except for the original film.
Godzilla films in the Reiwa Series ignore all the previous series except for the original film.

Blair Witch 2, which I thought was pretty good, had very little connection to the original.

Any others? CHUD 2.
It's one of the best awful movies I've ever seen and has nothing to do with the original that I can recall. I read once it started as a sequel to Return Of the Living Dead which makes more sense than it being a sequel to CHUD.
I saw CHUD 2 probably 20 years ago and all I remember about it besides how horrible it was, is a scene where Bud (I think it was Bud) was laying on a gurney in the hospital and somehow it started rolling and it rolled completely out of the hospital and down the highway like it had a motor or something on it and the theme song "Bud The CHUD", which is a classic lol.
If you're a fan of bad movies it's great. I'm surprised Redlettermedia hasn't gotten around to it yet.

Wasn't Julie Delpy's character related to David or the nurse somehow in American Werewolf in Paris? That movie was bullsh*t either way.
