Doghouse6 I need to look at details more .. I never ever even noticed how the grapefruit half was crimped in that minor Cagney picture.! Must've made it uncomfortable for Mae during the brief moment that she was wearing it. Kate Middleton's been giving them a run for their money lately. But it's that kind of a family.

Doghouse6When asked why she wears those incredibly bright hats The Queen said words to the effect of ~ so that if the people see the hat they can say that they have seen The Queen ! I have pictures taken at the Ascot Races of the Queen and the Queen Mother … two little dots of pink and bright blue in the Royal Box across the field from where I was … BUT I can see them and know who they are and can say that I "saw" them Some of the younger royal's hats …

At least Her Majesty wears them on top of her head. Most of Kate's look as though they've been blown askew by a breeze, or were velcroed to the side of her head.

This hat could have used Velcro to avoid the horse harness effect .. one of the hats that "inspired" this thread
@doghouse …. re: poor kate … I hope she at least likes wearing hats !

Well, just about every one of those films are on my personal list Because of the fashion. Far from being distractions, they are part and parcel of the joy of watching the film. For these women, buying clothes to shape their image was a huge preoccupation . For women in TGE audience , seeing new fashions was a reason to see the film. Those strange body parts as accessories was a favorite Motif of Adrian , tge designer of those outfits.
I’ll agree Bonnie and Clyde costumes much too clean and styled . But Dunnaway and Beatty were Much better looking than the actual Bonnie and Clyde. They chose better looking actors to help us empathasize with them , because that’s the story they wanted to tell. The clothes were made stylish and clean for the same reason. They weren’t so so out of period, just too clean.
In Gigi those crazy costumes were a perfect depiction of the ladies’ failure to see who Gigi is. Trying to be the girl they want , she’s a complete misfit. When she finally comes together , she isn’t the girl Gaston wants . He wants Gigi, and it isn’t until the last frame that we finally see her, a gamine all grown.
The clash of colors in Diamonds are a girls best friend is kind of The point.
The mad hats in MFL, well yess, Beaton is mocking the style and having some fun. But every one of those hats could have been worn at Ascot in the late Victorian - Edwardian era.

RE: My Fair Lady Hats "Speaking of funny hats …. They wear some DOOZIES in My Fair Lady .. but they work because it's that kind of a movie … " agree 100% with marshamae Ditto costuming in GIGI … it's an essential part of the movie as is dressing Audrey in most of her pictures.
It's when the films are not about fashion and glamor and setting the timeframe via fashions that the costuming occasionally becomes (for me at least) distracting. If I notice the clothes being changed too often and too ostentatiously when the plot doesn't require it, it's distracting.
fwiw .. I never had a problem with Bonnie or Clyde's outfitting ! Some are based on actual images of the real B&C.

Audrey Hepburn in How to Steal a Million 1966: A sort of masquerade without being at a masquerade head-wear. Crash helmet fashion that wouldn't have made any difference in a crash.

The film Brazil immediately comes to mind. And the period costumers Valmont and Dangerous Liaisons offered distractions.
