Star Wars - 10/10 American Graffiti - 7/10 Revenge of the Sith - 6/10 THX 1138 - 5/10 Attack of the Clones - 4/10 The Phantom Menace - 2/10 ...and the two points are only for Darth Maul and the fight scene.
I just don't understand what anybody sees in that movie outside of the fact that its a Star Wars movie.
I mostly just think it is goofy fun, but I don't take any of the Star Wars movies seriously. More specifically I love the visual world it creates, I love the art direction, I love the different strange characters - yes, even Jar Jar Binks, I enjoy the political aspect, Darth Maul is an awesome villain, I like most of the acting, especially Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor. The pod race is awesome, I enjoy the lore even if it isn't very well written, I love the score, I love the final fight etc. The only thing I actually hate is Jake Lloyd's performance. The OT is good, but if it never existed it would make no difference to me. Here is Roger Ebert's very positive review of The Phantom Menace. Whether you agree or not, he does give me a good understanding of why he likes it so much. www.rogerebert.com/reviews/star-wars-episode-i-the-phantom-menace-1999"At the risk of offending devotees of the Force, I will say that the stories of the "Star Wars" movies have always been space operas, and that the importance of the movies comes from their energy, their sense of fun, their colorful inventions and their state-of-the-art special effects. I do not attend with the hope of gaining insights into human behavior. Unlike many movies, these are made to be looked at more than listened to, and George Lucas and his collaborators have filled "The Phantom Menace" with wonderful visuals." I feel the exact same way.

I agree with the paragraph you reposted.
But upon reading the whole review I disagree that he's being as generous as you think. Yes, he says he likes what he sees, its a technical marvel. No doubt. But he's actually describing something akin to a gift or a present that has beautiful wrapping, and bows, and all the bells and whistles, that when you open it up is actually empty. There's nothing inside. It's shallow. That's how I feel about TPM. And it's made all the worse by the fact that its done by the original creator himself, Lucas.
But put aside the filmmaking. Even story-wise its irrelevant. We could have started with AOTC as Episode 1 and the overall story of the saga would be none the worse at all.

I see his review differently than you, but I get why you would see it that way. Because you hate the movie you have to try and discount the reasons people like it. I don't really understand that way of thinking, it seems very shortsighted and immature to me, but you have the right to think however you want. My point is that everyone has their reasons.

Okay back it up a tad, you're getting a little personal. I'm not discounting reasons why people like anything and there's nothing shortsighted or immature about calling out a bad movie for what it is: bad.
I could go down an entire list of perfectly legitimate reasons why the movie is poorly made, from directing all the way down the line. And what's more, tons of people agree with me, based on purely filmmaking criticisms and observations. And that's not even talking about the irrelevance of the story, stupid inane characters, and plot holes of which there many.
You know what way of thinking I don't understand? Liking a movie even though its awful just because its part of franchise that you're a fan of. I LOVE Star Wars as a franchise, but I'm not going to call a crappy movie good just because of that.
Your suddenly personal dig is highly unwarranted.

American Graffiti- 9.5/10
It's one of the most sentimental movies I've ever seen. Not to mention bittersweet. And a great soundtrack.
