An underappreciated gem. Yes, the pace is a little sluggish at times, but there are some magnificent performances and some great lines. I can't tell whether Yul Brynner (The Chairman) or Danny Kaye (The Ragpicker) gave the best performance. Ragpicker: [holding a stack of bills he has picked up from the ground] Excuse me. Did you drop this? Chairman: What? I never drop anything. Ragpicker: Oh, then this money isn't yours? Chairman: [snatching the money] All money is mine. * * * Chairman: I'm sorry we're late. The traffic, I'm afraid. Like the poor, the Citroens breed like flies. * * * Chairman: [contemptuously] I know these [working-class] people. I came from them. Fortunately, I escaped.

excerpt from The Ragpicker's monologue (speaking as a Rich Man in a mock trial in his own defense):
Everyone knows that the poor have no one but themselves to blame for their poverty. It's only just that they suffer the consequences. But how is it the fault of the rich if they are rich? It's a horrible fate, but I am resigned to it. ... It is a matter of fact faithfully reported in all the newspapers I own that I spend all my waking hours trying to rid myself of my money. I spend in order that you may live. ...
If I have tan shoes, I buy black ones. Now who benefits? If I have a Fiat, I buy a Mercedes. Who benefits? ... If I have a wife, I pay alimony. I send a private plane to Java to collect flowers for my mother's funeral. I build hospitals to treat the children who eat the food my farms grow. I endow whole universities to experiment on animals in order that the old shall grow young. Now who can deny these things? Not you, nor you, nor you!
But no matter what I do, I cannot rid myself of my money. ...
Without money, nobody likes you. Nobody trusts you. Nobody believes you. Because to have money is to be...virtuous. Honest. Beautiful. And witty. And to be without it is to be ugly, and boring, and stupid, and useless.

I went to the royal charity film premiere I remember, it was my best friend's birthday treat, and she asked me to come. It was delightful, I thought going to the cinema for a birthday was brilliant, so much better than one of those stupid parties with games etc, I always hated parties. I remember enjoying the film very much but I have never rewatched it since, not sure why.

It's one of those movies that has always eluded me, and with such a great cast it can't be uninteresting,
