Last year in early spring my wife bought a bird feeder. One morning I looked out and the feeder was on the ground and all the bird feed gone. I had seen a squirrel so I blamed it the squirrel. Well I put the feeder back on the tree branch. One night I heard something and turned on the light. The feeder was on the ground and two raccoons were eating the spilled food. So I got one of these: Two nights later I got one of the raccoons. Took it deep in the woods and let it go. The next night I got the other one and did the same with it. I thought good problem solved. Boy was I wrong. 29 raccoons later I finally think the problem is over. Raccoons are usually night animals but we would sometimes see them after the food in the day time. Any of you have any problems with raccoons?

Sometimes the resident raccoon tips over the bird water dish. And poops in the neighbor's window well.

I only put out enough food for the birds to finish during the day. Now we have deer.

Up here it seems every couple of years a pet raccoon gnaws the face off a baby. Cute does not equal cuddly and too many parents are idiots.

The squirrels were constantly attacking my bird feeder, so I made a deal with them--I'd leave them peanuts in a separate feeder at the end of the yard. This worked for a short time, until blue jays discovered the peanuts and now currently raid the squirrel feeder.
Meanwhile, raccoons prowl around the perimeter of the yard at night, but I've been leaving out dog biscuits and chicken scraps for what appears to be a shy fox which comes by every night in order to discourage the raccoons (I don't care for animals with hands). At least, I hope the fox is still around--do raccoons eat Milk Bones?
In addition, there is the gang of deer which come by every night for corn; the only issue with them is that they sometimes single out one deer and chase it away. I'm trying to befriend this one by coaxing it with food while the others aren't around.
It's a jungle out there.

Yes. Raccoons will eat anything. Probably the only animal that will eat raw onions.
