Ok, so I know the obvious answers... I guess what I'm asking is: why take the risk?
I recently purchased a SNES Classic at the mall (gift for a friend. I've had my own for months) and the two sales clerks were both telling me how to hack it and get more games on it. This is something I would never do because given my general anxiety level I'd just be paranoid as hell about it. Yet I still hear about people doing this all the time with all sorts of software. Makes me wonder why people even take the chance - even if those chances are low. Who wants to get busted for stealing video games (or movies or tv shows?)
The only thing that would tempt me are those Despecialized Star Wars movies... But even that isn't enough for me to ever take the risk.
Maybe I'm just a goody two shoes (does anyone use that phrase anymore? What do shoes have to do with anything?)

well I myself never download anything illegally and it's not because I'm afraid to get caught just the principal it's the same reason why I wouldn't steal a candy bar from the store yes I could get away with it but it's still stealing. And when it comes to movies I always tell people you know if everybody download them illegally there would be no more new movies cuz none of them would make money.

It's another version of stealing.

beats me. as a content creator who is pretty much depending on people not downloading things illegally it really annoys me that a lot of people still dont sem to realize it is theft and directly impacts the creators...
sad, especially these days when legal content is very affordable.

Oftentimes it's easier than trying to track down a legit copy.

Convenience number 1. Scarcity is another. Not interested in new things myself, but a lot of old stuff isn't easy to get. The best download sites are the ones devoted to archiving old things that even the parent companies have no interest in. Now that Disney owns Fox there's a good chance most of the older Fox stuff will never be released in HD so any preservation of things is good. Another thing is that with many such things, people wouldn't bother paying for them anyway. Easier if companies just add a $5 charge to internet and leave it at that. It more than adequately covers any alleged losses.

Oftentimes it's easier than trying to track down a legit copy. I get that. There's a ton of great Nintendo titles (mainly for GameCube) that are now extremely rare or expensive, and Nintendo is seemingly uninterested in rereleasing them. Still, I personally wouldn't take the risk. Dont you worry about potential legal trouble?

Dont you worry about potentially getting caught though? As I said, I'd be super paranoid about that.

Fun Fact: No major studio has ever sued anyone for downloading a film.
Ever.
The idea that you will get "caught" or "punished" is a myth.

Years ago, I would sometimes download an album so I could properly evaluate it and make an intelligent buying decision.
Thankfully almost everything is now on YouTube. I can easily make an intelligent buying decision and the artist gets paid for the streaming - it's a win win.

They have that warning on every dvd: 5 years in jail or (some massive fine). I've wondered if anyone actually gets that. It'd be seriously devastating for someone's whole life to be ruined just for DLing a movie or something. (Good to see you posting again btw! 😀 )

As I said, I'd be super paranoid about that. Nope-because the stuff is private trackers and mostly SD not HD. I only rarely look at a public tracker and if I do, it's usually something few people would watch. The only time I got nailed was when I downloaded a Simpsons new-and got a warning letter. So I stopped downloading Simpsons. Besides, many of the things are uploaded to Youtube anyway.

Because it's free and the actual risk is next to zero.
