I re-watched The First Avenger for the first time probably since it came out, and I actually thoroughly enjoyed it more than I thought. I still think Wonder Woman is a better a Captain America/War film of the two, and the First Avengers is a bit "clean" looking and retro with the tesseract-lasers guns, but, it's a film set in a superhero world, but also, at the end of the day, it's really a character piece for Steve Rogers, more than anything, albeit a really big budget character piece. Evans nailed the role, but so did Hugo Weaving as Red Skull. Weaving is an amazing actor in his own right but is a master at different accents and he really put in the work and did the research to pull off an authentic Austrian accent (Red Skull is Austrian in the comics) rather than do a cheap generic buff German accent, because there is a distinction between German and Austrian. And its a shame too, because all he really was there for was to be a foil for Rogers. But there's so much of his character in the comics they really cut, particularly his Nazism and racism and xenophobia. He's regarded as a probably the most racist and hated person in the any brand of comics (even the Joker in a crossover finds him despicable.) They really shied away from that, which I get, especially with the racism and xenophobia because the film is more geared at kids, but so is something like Indiana Jones, but that didn't shy away from depicting Nazis. It's a shame he was recasted too. But hopefully we can see more of him as he is one of the biggest Marvel villains is essentially Captain America's Joker. I seem to recall that the Russo bros said Red Skull is free of the curse on Vormir after Thanos retrieved the soul stone and can do anything he wants now.

I always liked Red Skull as well. Hugo Weaving played him exactly as they should had; as someone leaning into their villainy. It's a very simple but very effective characterization.

I agree. The Red Skull doesn't get enough credit and love.

Red Skull has always been one of my favorite Marvel villains and I think he is one of the best villains in the MCU.

First Avenger is my 2nd fav CA to Civil War. Red Skull was well done, an intelligent enough foil for Cap. I truly appreciated his becoming guardian of the Soul Stone in IW, sharing screen time with Thanos & Gamora.

Red Skull was always one of my favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe villains. After Hugo Weaving's complaints about the heavy makeup procedure, I thought we would never see the character again which is why it was such a surprise to see him re-appear in Avengers: Infinity War. Although it's a long shot, I do hope that Captain America sees Red Skull is still alive in Endgame.
