Some issues it raises...
“I will say there is more to the story than you’ve seen,” Abrams said about Rey’s parentage (via Good Morning America).
Good. IMO even if Rey's parents don't turn out to be major characters (ex: Lukes daughter) they could still be SOMEone. My theory is that they were Jedi Apprentices from Lukes school that got destroyed. At least it would explain her abilities and connection to Luke. But anything would be better than nothing.
But what if it turns out that its something else, like we find out that Palpatine used the midichlorians to create Anakin, and now it turns out he used them to create Rey? That could be. I actually don't think Palpatine is actually going to be in this movie. I think he's going to be felt more as a presence that affects events somehow. Maybe this is how?
But another issue they bring up is...
Once it was revealed that Darth Vader was, in fact, Luke Skywalker’s father in “The Empire Strikes Back,” suddenly the stage was set for the last name of a character becoming their most important characteristic.
I'm going to have to disagree with that. I never would have been so curious about Rey's parentage if they hadn't brought it up as an important issue in TFA. They refer to the mystery several times in that movie. Its significant.
They didn't do that with Finn or Poe or anyone else in TFA. I don't care who's Finn's parents or Poe's parents, because they didn't make a thing about it. That line in the article makes it sound as if it US, the audience, who are making a big deal about her parentage, when in fact there are several scenes in TFA that clearly establish that her parentage is of some kind of significance to the story moving forward.
I honestly believe that Abrams would have had a much better answer to the question than Johnson gave us, and I believe we may get it in TRoS.
Or we may not. LOL!

I honestly hope that her parents really are nobody. I like the idea that ANYBODY can be special, ANYBODY can be important, ANYBODY can be a hero. If they make her an heir to an important bloodline, IMO it will negate that message. Having said that, I wouldn't mind if the reasons for her parents leaving her were different than them just being alkies who sold her for space booze. The theory I had pre-TLJ was that they were regular people who noticed that their daughter had some Force abilities that maybe even she wasn't aware of, and knowing that the First Order was out there and might be looking for "special" kids like her, they hid her away to protect her.
People also shouldn't forget that Rian Johnson didn't say definitively that the alcoholic parents story was the truth, but the truth as Kylo understood it. The fact that Kylo believed the story was true doesn't mean it is.
