No one is being childish here except him. That he is unable to grasp the importance and contribution of art & architecture to economic development & prosperity of cities and countries is not anyone's problem. Spending on art in the form of infrastructure or any permanent source of revenue is not a waste of money especially when you are spending on things of historical importance. But I am sure the concept that historical architecture is an important economic driver is oblivious to people who are ignorant. He probably doesn't know how much UNESCO places importance to the preservation and restoration of culturally important buildings. Anyway, insinuating that decent members of the board reject basic human values and decency only speaks volumes about his arrogance.
Good thing is that UNESCO is going to play a key role in the rebuilding of Notre Dam. Just because some people are incapable of understanding its importance wouldn't stop its rebuilding. I consider Notre Dame a part of world heritage and not just French heritage.
Since when were you put in a position to decide who is a "decent member of the board", and who isn't? The irony of doing so whilst calling someone 'arrogant' isn't lost. Try to imagine what it would be like "proving" that the Holocaust was immoral to a German Nazi in 1944 and you might perhaps figure out how impossibly stupid "proving" moral stances ultimately is--and why even asking for proof is basically something only a child does.

I grasp that these things are important. But your moral and ethical framework is broken if you don't realize how immoral it is to sit on billions of cash until a building owned by a fabulously rich organization burns down, then cough up those billions to rebuild it when this entire time, you could have used that wealth to make millions of lives fundamentally better. The church has the means to do it themselves, genius. As for the economics of it, two points: 1. Those billions could be used for any number of improvements to all kinds of infrastructure or other economic investments that the church isn't going to do themselves or couldn't do themselves. This isn't rocket science. 2. Ned's suggestion of turning the ruins into a museum is certainly viable and would maintain the church as a tourist draw. The same thing was done with great success in my city when a famous midwestern mill exploded. The ruins are now a popular museum and I see people there every time I take a walk where I pass it by.

You are saying as if people who are looking to restore it are in some way responsible for the building burning down. Accidents happen. It's not the fault of people who are looking to restore it. Yes, the bulding is owned by a rich organization but its cultural importance trumps that organization. It is important for all French people and is, in fact, a world heritage site.
The economics always works best on long term perspective. In fact "tunnel vision" or "short term focus" are considered very disreputable terms in economics and finance. Short term decision makings are incorrect. The thing is that there is evidence of how important architectures are for the economy, job creation and expediating growth of a region. Take Mauritius for example. An African nation but more prosperous because it has a well developed tourism industry. There is evidence that countries spending higher on service industries tend to be indicative of greater real economic development. Yes, it will take time to restore Notre Dame. But will it be worth it? Absolutely. In the long term, you generate enough revenue to help humanity in other ways. Also, there are other reasons when it comes to sites like Notre Dame whose importance stands out culturally and historically.
