Have no words to say that can lessen the pain of relatives whose close ones died. As of the latest article that I read there are at least 52 dead & 280 injured In multiple blasts In Sri Lanka's churches & Hotels. Not a good day for the people celebrating Easter in SL. Hopefully, no other blast happens today.
Edit: Death toll has increased to over 160. It seems to be terrorist attacks targeting Christian Churches and 5 star hotels.

If you sow the wind, you shall reap the whirlwind. It's not clear yet. There used to ethnic struggles in SL for a long time but ethnic struggles ceased a decade ago. It is best not to make any guesses when we don't have concrete information. If there will be any new revelations then I will let you know.
Edit: Just removed the first line where I said I can't imagine any particular community doing it. This is a world of wackos and there are wackos in all communities.

In the past few years there have been attacks on Muslims by Buddhist monks (Buddhists are in majority in SL). But attack on Christians as a group is not common although small attacks do happen against most of the minority groups.

My news report says at the moment 138 killed and 400 inured though they are not giving any idea at the moment to apportion blame though they are indeed Catholic churchs and tourist hotels. Suicide bombers are mentioned.

This is one of those sad moments when you don't even want to hear about the group that did it. Because there will be more tension going forward and more divisions in society.

My brother-in-law’s family are Anglo Sri Lankans who left the country after it became independent. One of the reasons why they left was because they’re Roman Catholics and the anti British feelings also spread to Sri Lankans who practiced Christianity. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was an Islamic attack but as you have already mentioned, the religious hatred appears to affect all groups.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this was an Islamic attack but as you have already mentioned, the religious hatred appears to affect all groups. It's just so dispiriting and painful. Everything is going well and then a few morons carry out terrorist attacks and leave not just pain for many but a feeling of communal division. Feel so bad for the Lankans. Hope they can regroup again and things become normal.

Two new blasts, hours after the first series. This is really sad. Yeah....there were two more attacks after I posted the OP. It's really disturbing how elaborately planned attack it turned out to be. Now the only hope can be that this doesn't set a precedence for frequent such attacks in future. The country already suffered a lot in civil war and past terrorism.

From the nature of the attacks, including the targeting of international standard hotels, leads me to believe that the most likely primary goal was to heavily impact tourism.

I don't how effective it will prove to be on the long term tourism but certainly it will negatively affect the short term tourism. I fear a few countries will send out warning messages to their citizens who want to travel to SL. |

The terrorists targeted Christian churches. No Buddhist or Hindu temples were struck. Any guerrilla act in Sri Lanka and one assumes it's the angry Tamil Hindu minority. But I don't see why Tamils would attack Christians and not Buddhists, their adversarial majority. I think it's most likely these terrorists are Muslim. The terrorists targeted places where tourists would go. Churches, hotels, a zoo. My guess: Since it's the Easter weekend, more tourists would have visited churches than mosques or temples. I think it's most likely these terrorists are assholes.

A very high percentage of Tamils are Christians in Sri Lanka. In fact the Tamil ethnicity is the biggest base for Catholics in SL.
