Does anybody like this sequel? John G. Avildsen returns to the directing chair but certainly didn't meet with the same quality last time he directed (this was after Karate Kid II and III). The movie is just joyless throughout, providing really no sense of excitement or fun the prior sequels were at least able to offer. The timeline is damn wonky, as well. The movie, like the other sequels, picks up where the last film left off. This would be early 1986 as Rocky fought Drago Christmas Day 1985. No explanation for how his son aged so rapidly while gone. Anyway, as we is needed another reason to dislike Paulie, he goes and signs power of attorney to some crook who takes the Balboa fortune. Fortunately for Paulie, Rocky didn't blast his teeth out. The relationship with Rocky and his son (played by Stallone's actual kid) is pretty cringe worthy. Rocky, having suffered brain damage from his last fight, decides he will retire again. He takes the trainer role to Tommy "The Machine" Gunn, an up and comer who quickly abandons Rocky when George Washington Duke, a lively boxing promoter, offers him babes and $$. This culminates in the only bright spot when Rocky and Tommy slug out on the street after Paulie, the idiot who lost Rocky's fortune, is punched by Tommy.

I think you summed it up nicely. I found the film pretty cringe worthy. To me, it came off as very try-hard in capturing the realism of the first two films while getting away from the sensational nature of III and IV. Rocky's return to being slow was especially awkward and not well done. I mean really, the guys mental capacity has been all over the place throughout the series after II. Even in Creed they tried to allude to him not being able to read well, yet he runs a restaurant.

Stallone said Rocky was supposed to die in the original script and MGM didn't want to have it.
So they rewrote the script on the fly, didn't delay production.
If that's the case they should have just backed up up a year and rewrote a better story ...

I mean, it’s not as bad as some other horrendous f-ups in franchises. At least this has some charming moments and I love the gym flashback scene.

The worst of the Rocky films, but it's still watchable enough.

Like, hey, you know Rocky ain't what you call punchy. He's just got, like, a relaxed brain.

I consider "ROCKY V" to be the Worst Movie in the Franchise.

I consider " ROCKY V" to be the Worst Movie in the Franchise. George Washington Duke is probably the best part of the movie.

Saw parts of it on television. Seemed pretty dull.

In the film, Paulie suggests to Rocky to do commercials again to make money. But the financial guy says that his shady past as a collector for Gazzo would prevent sponsors from using him. Well the shady past didn't prevent sponsors from using Rocky and having him do all those commercials/print ads for various products in the opening montage of Rocky III.

Well if anything I think Tommy the machine Gunn is actually a pretty good villain he's got some great lines you don't own me! nobody does! I'm going to get my respect!
the thing that really makes no sense though is the world champion, I understand Ivan Drago loses to Rocky but still shouldn't he be the world champion not some bum?

I mean why didn't Drago just fight someone else for the title in the fifth movie I mean he was obviously the best boxer and could have beat the crap out of that bum

Maybe Drago still couldn't fight in the U.S. for the title. On another note, during one of the Rocky IV training montages, we see him knock out other boxers while sparring. Were those guys killed? Drago does pack a punching power of over 2000 PSI.

I actually like the final fight more than half the other final fights. The part where Rocky hears Mick in his head saying ‘I didn’t hear no bell’ was epic.

I don't know why Union Cane would want to fight Rocky at the beginning of the movie if the title was vacant anyway. Shouldn't Cane have gone after the vacant title instead?

LOL, Was that George Washington Duke character really supposed to be some sort of a bad ripoff of Don King ?
I mean I think the Actor that played him did a Pretty Darn Good Job in the role.
