Let me digress right away. Smiley Hoffman is NOT related to Charley Smiley has a brother called Luckie . WTF are mum and dad called?
The Hoffman's round of 65 came out of left field, My guess is that he is not on anybody's "possible winner" list. We'll see
Although it was great to see the leaderboard dominated by Brits/Europeans during the day, more than one of them came to grief at the 18th. Both Fitzpatrick and Pieters had double bogies there.
I watched Jordan Spieth have his 9 at the 15th. He attempted to play the hole as a 3-shotter but his approach spun back of the green at such a rate that it was never going to hang up on the bank. His next must have been thinned, so far over the green did it fly. Then worried about chipping too strongly back and going into the water again, he left his chip way short of the hole with a very fast snaky putt to follow, etc., etc.,etc. To his credit he birdied two of the last 3 to stay in a reasonable position at +3
Westy is in the kind of position where a player of his ability and experience would hope to be at -2. He ripped the arse out of the back 9 with 5 successive birdies from the 13th. Given his reputation as a "misputter" that was some performance. Can he keep it up ? . I watched Rory's early holes and he was showing nothing. He got to +3 and I expected an 80something from him but he recovered to level par. Maybe that will prove the springboard for him to have a great weekend.
Also well in it are Rose, Casey, Garcia, Sullivan, Kjeldsen, Lowry and defending champion Willett, who dropped 3 shots in his first 2 holes but got himself back to +1
Good first round with a lot of wind. All to play for or will Charley blow everybody away ?

Well we don't really want a run away winner. It's a bit boring. Not wishing charley bad luck. But the pack needs to come to him or he needs to come to the pack.
However he isn't a player that has any proven record of being able to cope with this situation.. this of course could go both ways (it normally goes bad)
Majors/any tourney is never won on day one, only lost.

C'mon Charley Hoffman! Hopefully somebody wins it for the first time again. Lowry or Rory I'm hoping for.

This course owes Westwood one.
So I will always support him over anyone else.(until he is too old and out of contention)

I might watch the last few holes on Sunday. Until then, I wish it would go away.
Tom Rinaldi here talks about it all with such dripping earnestness and reverence, it makes me want to take a shower.

I might watch the last few holes on Sunday. I feel the same way. But I check the score every half hour to see who's doing well. Garcia just dropped a few and this Charley Hoffman who I never even heard of(not much of a golf fan) has stretched his lead. Hope he can handle the pressure for the next few days.

I guess this means my son, the golf nut, won't be helping his dad out tomorrow.

Great as it is to see two Europeans at the top of the Leaderboard, the story that fascinates me is that of Jordan Spieth, who sits joint 4th, just two shots back after carding a 9 in round 1, at the 15th., caused initially, by a decent approach shot spinning back of the green into Rae's Creek. He had a similar experience last year, taking 9 at the 12th and finishing that championship in 2nd place. Neither Rose nor Garcia are known as great putters which makes their positions at the top surprising to me. given how difficult the Augusta greens are reputed to be. I hope Sergio does it. He was deemed to be the successor to Seve and Jose Marie Olazabal many years back and has carried the weight of expectation around for a long time. It would be great to see him get that monkey of his back.

Sergio has a long history of following a good round with a bad one, so I think we can write him off. Justin Rose on the other hand is a very good front runner, so I'm thinking it'll come down to a battle between him and Spieth.

Sergio also had a reputation as Saturday choker in Majors, throwing away good positions with poor 3rd rounds. He put that to bed yesterday, so don't write him off

Rose looks like he's on track here. Kuchar with the round of the day so far.

Sergio, Sergio, Sergio. A six foot putt for the Masters and he doesn't even come close.
At least Justin's did.

At last ! Who would want to have to follow in the footsteps of Seve and Jose Marie Olazabal ?
Sergio has and has fulfilled his destiny. We all knew he was good enough, it just took a little longer than expected to show itself. Now that the monkey is off your back, let's win some more majors

I missed the ending. I decided it was more important to watch the Indians and Blue Jackets games.
