he was so damn good in THE ANDERSON TAPES as the gay man.
but he showed he could hold his own as a tough guy in a main role in CONFESSIONS OF A POLICE CAPTAIN.
its a shame that he lived in an age when he was mostly relegated to supporting roles. the 60s and 70s were merciless if you were a great actor.

Martin Balsam is worth mentioning, one of the great supporting actors. Martin with Telly and Greg in Cape Fear 1962 Martin with Pepp and Audrey in Breakfast at Tiffany's''Horrible that one can't find a reasonable pic from Martin's Oscar winning A Thousand Clowns
Catch-22, a funny as hell role, in an uneven movie The obligatory guest star role on Murder, She Wrote. Thanks for reminding me of Martin, pimpinainteasy , there might be many treasures there!

He was great as Arbogast in Psycho. Definitely. I think that was his best role.

Don't forget about All the President's Men playing the role of Howard Simons, the Post's Managing Editor... I think his role was abbreviated a little too much in the script though, as Simons was a major influence in the Post pursuing the story of Watergate. A smaller TV role that he was in which I thought he did an excellent job in was Raid on Entebbe.

I'm sure I've seen that film, but I don't recall anything about it offhand. The two roles I remember him for are Seven Days In May and The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three. Ever seen the original Psycho?
