I just saw this on TV. It didn’t seem like my cup of tea when it came out, but I noticed it got pretty good reviews both from critics and on here, so I decided to give it a try.
Happy I did, it’s a fun little b-movie—not especially memorable, but definitely enjoyable (and diverting, in these corona-ridden times). Took its plagiarizing-
Groundhog-
Day premise in unexpected directions, which was nice (the cop scene was a highlight), and though the identity of the killer was blindingly obvious from the beginning, one detail was a welcome surprise:
The roommate originally planned to poison her with the cupcake! I didn’t see that coming, which infuriates me because the filmmakers dangle that cupcake in front of us nearly the whole time.
I loved the lead: she’s spunky, fun, and effortlessly likable. She even emotes pretty well (the scene with the dad
didn’t make me cringe), which is pretty rare in these kinds of movies, and the scene where she takes on the serial killer in the hospital left me cheering for her. If they ever attempt a Nancy Drew movie for the umpteenth time, she’d be a great choice for Nancy. Anyone know what else she’s in?
Problems? It’s a pretty silly script, but that’s part of its charm. Really, my biggest problem is that it’s not scary. Not in the slightest, and I’m sorta a wimp (and proud!) with horror movies. I’ve never seen a horror flick, in fact, with so few scares. As you noted,
Marv , that scene where she first confronts the killer is suspenseful, but that’s about it. Also, many of the plot threads don’t really go anywhere, and as noted the twist is also obvious.
But it’s fun, and I had a good time watching it. A pleasant surprise.
