fort apache - 9/10 Terrific take on the American West, while the tension between Fonda and Wayne gives it dramatic chops.
she wore a yellow ribbon - 8/10 Technicolor makes it visually spectacular. A film to watch, rather than listen to.
rio grande - 6 Solid, if dullish. Mom and Dad stuff a bit icky.

Rio Grande is the one I've never been able to sit through. Yes, I've tried. The style of the film, the characters, turns me off.
Fort Apache is a solid cavalry western with Henry Fonda as a Custer type officer whom nobody likes; nobody in the army, I mean. John Wayne is his near opposite, and the clash of temperaments and values make this an interesting movie; well made, watchable.
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon is far and above my favorite of the three. The Technicolor vistas of the American southwest are stunningly beautiful. It's less story-driven than Fort Apache. The major characters seem more at ease with one another, which gives the film a glow. The avoidance, in the end, of a violent confrontation may run counter to a western fan's expectation, though I find that it plays out just fine. There's a whole lot to like, even love, about this film. Ford's pictorialism is on full display, as one can watch it just for its visual excellence, and yet it tells a story, too.

I like them all quite a bit. She Wore A Yellow Ribbon is my favorite. We used to sing that song as we marched in basic training long ago. Fort Apache and She Wore A Yellow Ribbon were surprisingly sympathetic to Native Americans for their times. Fort Apache ends with Wayne uneasily agreeing with the reporters' mythic understanding of the ambush that Fonda foolishly led his troops into. A bit like the end to The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
"We’ve had a lot of people who were supposed to be great heroes, and you know damn well they weren’t. But it’s good for the country to have heroes to look up to."
- John Ford

She Wore A Yellow Ribbon is probably the best out of the three. Beautiful Remington inspired imagery and one of the more nuanced John Wayne performances. Fort Apache has the interesting dynamic between Henry Fonda and John Wayne’s characters. Rio Grande was just dull.
