Meh, I see no problem. None of us can fully detach ourselves from our cultural history. Catholicism has merely absorbed deep rooted historic religious traditions, not changed doctrine to agree with it. Honoring the exploits of the saints is a wonderful Catholic tradition.
As an atheist I also find Catholicism a much more palatable religion than the Protestant sects.

If memory serves, I think that, as Christianity was spread, sometimes unwillingly accepted, other indigenous people quietly merged their gods into characters within Christianity.

Much of my family is from that area. Im used to it. The hill on which Juan Diego has his ‘revelation’ used to house a temple to the Aztec mother goddess Tonantzin.
