I considered adding a poll, but it would have been a long one, and I couldn't have gotten every iconic mother possible.
So, who is it and why? I will reveal mine at the end.

She played Jimmy Stewart's mom in It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), Of Human Hearts (1938), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) & Vivacious Lady (1938 ).

Oh, and I have another name to mention. Jane Darwell as Ma Joad in The Grapes of Wrath (1940) is unforgettable.

Clair Huxtable (Phylicia Rashad) on The Cosby Show. Classy kind person that for me anyway, is untainted by the late unpleasantness associated with her costar.
Debra Barone (Patricia Heaton) on Everybody Loves Raymond. Admittedly, mainly because Heaton was a complete MILF since her character is a horrible human being.

I've seen neither of those, but will put them on my to-watch list! Thanks, Rachel! All of them are good movies but The Grapes of Wrath (1940) is a must watch. So if you could watch one of them then I would suggest The Grapes of Wrath (1940). It would give you glimpses of the Great Depression and how life was during that period. It's not something that will depress you. It portrays a difficult era of American history but it would be educational and not depressing.

I used to want to be adopted by the Huxtables. Now watching it makes my skin crawl. I just can't separate the character from the actor, I think Cosby should be convicted of murder of America's favorite dad.

My Dad was a young boy, and his parents were subsistence farmers on the same land I grew up on. He had 5 siblings. My Mother's father was a part-time coal miner, bus driver, whatever, to sort of support his 6 kids.

Moro, Sen's adoptive mother in Princess Mononoke.
And then there's Hana, Yuki and Ame's mother in Wolf Children.
