Inspired by subjecting myself to Hot Space.
Completely disagree with #13.
15 Albums Where Great Rock Acts Lost The Plot
1. Rolling Stones – Their Satanic Majesties Request
2. Bob Dylan – Self Portrait
3. Kinks – Preservation Act 2
4. Lou Reed – Metal Machine Music
5. Queen – Hot Space
6. Kiss – Music From The Elder
7. Blondie – The Hunter
8. Neil Young – Trans
9. Clash – Cut The Crap
10. Pink Floyd – A Momentary Lapse Of Reason
11. Prince – Batman
12. De La Soul – Is Dead
13. REM – Monster
14. Michael Jackson – Invincible
15. Metallica – St Anger

Disagree with #4, 12, 13...Lou was trying to piss off the record company and did, De La Soul was trying to dump the hippie stigma which latched onto them and did and REM simply wanted to make a rock album and made a great one..

I think you can add Three Way Tie (For Last) by The Minutemen to this.

Would have to include every Mars Volta album after "Deloused In the Comatorium". That album had the combination of insanity and genious...but it was reigned in by a good producer, (Rick Rubin). After that, they decided to produce themselves, and failed miserably. No self control, no self editing. Every crappy thing they recorded was deemed worthy to put out and publish.

I disagree certainly with Monster but also with Batman. Warner Bros went to Prince as a WB artist and asked him for some songs for their film. He provided some kooky, far-out music well suited to the film. He knew exactly what he was doing. Not my favourite Prince record by quite a bit but to say he lost the plot is pure rubbish. Huge sales don't necessarily mean everyone is going to like the product but to go multi-platinum ain't bad for someone who lost the plot.

Q Magazine is still around? I think this was from a few years ago. I don't really agree with the Clash selection. It's just a weak effort by a band on their last legs, nothing "lost the plot" about it. I'd say Sandinista easily fits the description better.

I thought Invincible was on par with Jackson's 90s work.

St Anger was the first album I thought of. I hope James read this article. Things are better nowadays.
I liked A Momentary Lapse Of Reason.

Uhh, clearly the ultimate answer for an artist losing the plot is Billy Squier:

yeah, but Squire lost the plot in image only...That song and album were his typical, white boy rock, which had served him well over the years...

tpfkar A bit different meaning I guess, but wouldn't Beach Boys/ Smile be the quintessential example? May also be disqualified by it's lack of release (at the time). Van Halen - Van Halen III or even 5150. Top of the Rock
