I was thinking maybe it’ll be the dad, Pikachu and Tim having to solve another case. Except Pikachu won’t talk this time lol.

I am not sure but they obviously have it planned out since they announced there was going to be a sequel to 'Detective Pikachu' before the movie even came out and there has been talk of a 'Red and Blue' being adapted into a movie and I think it would be better to make the next movie an adaption of the main series games and the TV Show with Ash, Misty and Brock as the main stars 'cause that is what a lot of Pokemon fans have been wanting to see and I am still surprised they made 'Detective Pikachu' a live action movie before that. A proper live action series with those characters could easily become a franchise like the animated movies and would give them a chance to have a lot of different Pokemon appear in live action. With 'Sword and Shield' coming out soon on Nintendo Switch we are getting very close to there being 1000 Pokemon.

A comedic talking Pikachu with Ryan Reynolds as the voice is the whole shtick that made this a box office draw.
It certainly is what drew me in and made me enjoy it. I was totally hooked by the trailer and I got what I expected and then some.
A straight live-action version of the regular Pokemon franchise wouldn't work, at least not in the U.S.
The straightforward Pokemon animated feature films were not box office hits by any stretch of the imagination, and the animated series is a long-gone memory.
However, that faded memory repackaged as a clever satirical parody mixing live action and computer-generated imagery is what make this movie click.
The trick is to reach out beyond the fan base and captivate the larger, non-fan audience.

Well apparently they're not going to make any sequels.

Damn!!! This sucks to hear cause I was looking forward to seeing what they were gonna do with a sequel. Wait does this mean the RED AND BLUE movies aren’t happening either??? Also how come Sonic can get a sequel, but not Pikachu? Both made good amounts of money.

Bump
According to a representative for Legendary Entertainment (via Polygon), the project is still “in active development." Representatives for Uziel stated he is no longer involved, though he did write a screenplay. However, Legendary remained mum on who is currently working on Pokémon: Detective Pikachu 2.
