Wave Race 64 ; by far.
but in general that console was pretty weak in terms of racing games short of Wave Race 64 which I like to fire up occasionally to this day as it's still enjoyable in it's overall feel. although when I play Wave Race 64 now it's typically on my moded Wii (using emulator) (which I only got a hold of one late last year so I could run games from a external hard drive etc), or on a emulator on other stuff. although I did own it back in the day when it was pretty much new on N64 itself. it's definitely one of my most played games on the N64.

Wave Race 64 should be in the video game hall of fame.

It's not a popular pick, but I liked Road Rash 64. I used to play it all the time with my brothers.
It was fun to use the cars as ramps, and go flying into the air. You couldn't do that on the PS1's Road Rash 3D. If you did a wheelie and ran into a car in that game, you would just crash.
The only other racing game I played for the N64 was F-Zero X.
I will have to give this Wave Race 64 a try, since it seems to have such high praise in this thread.

I had fun with Mario Kart, Wave Race, F-zero, Cruis'n USA, Cruis'n World, Excitebike, 1080° Snowboarding (does that count?) but my favorite and the one I played for years after it came out: Multiplayer was one of the most intense experience ever. In the game they had recreated the Boonta Eve race just like in the movie, the exact same layout: Then, just like Anakin, right atth end you come out of the canyon: youtu.be/t8O5AihRSLU?t=140Then you used the boost, while being second, only to beat your friend by 0.001 second at the finish line with your engine on fire and about to blow up. I played Ben Quadinaros (whose pod just blows to piece before even starting the race in the movie) because he had the highest top speed pre-boost (often going as fast as some smaller pods while in boost) and he had the most durable pod. Hard to maneuver but once you learned to release the gas and let the pod glide to turn better, it wasn't that hard to stay in the race with his speed and acceleration. His pod: My friend preferred Ebe E. Endoccott because he had the best speed-maneuverability balance. I was the only one who found a way to beat Dud Bolt (the razors) : If you didn't stay in the upper levels the whole race you couldn't win it. Each lap you had a chance to start again but the lower levels were much longer. The higher race lane required a lot of handling and precision. I still remember that I won with Mars Guo (below average top speed but high maneuverability): Great time and memories.

jackspicerEven though it's graphics are outdated by today's standards, the core feel of the game is still solid as it does not really feel dated in that regard and the game is nearly 23 years old. I played it back in the old days when it was new. I honestly still enjoy replaying it once in a while, partially nostalgia and partially because it's still solid enough as out of all old racing types games, especially pre-2000's, that's my favorite straight up overall as, off the top of my head, I can't imagine there is much else in terms of racing games that I would still enjoy to this day that are pre-2000's besides Wave Race 64. hell, I would still consider it among the better racing types of games to this day even though since then I really like Forza series etc. but the sequel to Wave Race on the Nintendo Gamecube, Wave Race: Blue Storm, I never quite got into like I did the original N64 version as it's missing something. although it was pretty much the reason I bought a Gamecube back-in-the-day (which I eventually traded to my cousin for his XBox, which had a faulty DVD-ROM drive(he told me this prior to the trade), which I knew was going to be worth it since I was confident I could figure out how to mod it and run games from the XBox's hard drive which cured the DVD-ROM drive issue etc). TIP: I always use the green racer in Wave Race on N64 since he's the best once you get used to how to handle em. p.s. but you can play that game on a moded Wii or through a emulator on a PC etc as when I played it on my PC I just use my wireless XBox360 controller.

I exclusively use my laptop or my Raspberry Pi 3b+ for retro gaming (nowadays, that is. I had a flirtation with consoles when I was a teenager, but I started on the PC, and I went back to the PC when I left for college).
